Budget?
Tegra note 7 maybe? Nexus 7s have come down in price.
Quite happy with my Hudl, specially for the price, so I have to ask what exactly you are trying to do with it?
I like my Nexus (2013) 7 a lot. The only bugbear I have is the recent OS 'updates', which have locked me out of wifi at work (cisco network) owing to the 'signing in' process employees/guests have to go through being apparently uncompatiable with Lollipop. I'd recommend one as a good-value tablet, especially if you're in my situation (living in a rented room, don't have space for a desktop/laptop) and just need something to curl up with and watch TV.
Make sure to get the 2013 version though, apparently other ones are a bit iffy.
My wife and kids have 3 Hudl 2 and so far 2 of them have broke with manufacturers faults so I don't blame you for looking for an alternative.
I have a 2013 nexus 7 and it's awesome. Great everything and has QI charging and awesome battery life. It sips battery and only guzzles when playing games. Highly worth the money. Will last for years as it's made by Asus and Google always looks after there nexus devices before everything else OS wise.
I recently broke my Nexus 7 2012, and was looking for an alternative, but the 2013 seems to be in short supply, unless you're willing to pay way over the odds.
I went for a Hudl 2 in the meantime, and apart from a touchscreen that occasionally needs to be hit a couple of times to get a result, it seems to do the job for me...
+1 for the Nexus 7 2013, love mine.
http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the...ndroid-tablet/ has some more options but is in the middle of an update:
We’ve been working on a big update to this guide, but there are two new tablets, the Dell Venue 8 7000 and the Asus MeMO Pad ME572, that have just been released, and we want to evaluate these before making a final decision. If you can’t wait, our tentative pick from among the current choices is the Nvidia Shield Tablet. It offers a FullHD screen, very fast performance, virtually stock Android Lollipop, MicroSD memory expansion, optional LTE, and unique gaming features. Even if you don’t use the gaming features, it offers more value that the Nexus 9 (the runner-up among current tablets) in a more portable package. The Shield isn’t perfect, but it’s the best overall pick for most people in an Android tablet right now.

A tad on the pricey side but the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Pro 10.1 is a very nice piece of kit.
Admittedly, I wasn't impressed with the stock ROM (most people couldn't notice it but as with all TouchWiz roms, I can notice a small pause when you touch anything) and flashed mine immediately with CyanogenMod 12.
It has been utterly perfect since. The 2560x1600 display is OTT the 8 core CPU is OTT but having used a wide range of tablets this is the one that puts a smile on my face when I am using it.

we have now had 2 of out 3 hudl 2s fail due to manufacturer defects. One had a loose screen and the other the screen stopped working. No wonder Tesco is in trouble.
new one coming today. At least the warrenty is good.
I have a 32GB Nexus 7 (2013) and it's been great! No complaints at all with mine . It still copes well with the latest games & apps and has been working fine with the latest OS updates (my brothers 2012 model struggles a bit with Android 5.0 Lollipop).
My nexus 2013 bricked last week for no reason and the wife's nexus 2012 is so laggy after the recent few updates. Clearing the cache helped slightly but I'm feed up with the nexus line. I've just purchased a teclast x98 air 2, still waiting for delivery though. The one I bought for my brother is fantastic tough!
