Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
If you want a phone for the basics, the Moto G 2014 is a pretty good choice. I have been looking at it myself for a secondary backup phone.
Your first negative was true of the original Moto G, but the 2014 model is only 3G so far and that has a micro SD slot. It's a Snapdragon 400, so it is a reasonable processor inside and has 1GB of RAM to back it up. It runs pretty vanilla KitKat out of the box which helps both reduce system requirements and improve battery life. Also they promised to update this phone to Android L which may sway your vote.
It has dual sim too which may be good for you if you want to have a work sim and a home sim. And with regard to the battery, I'd say you are likely to replace the phone before the battery capacity decays significantly. Unless you wanted extended battery life when you are on the go, in which case you are going to have to go the route of USB battery packs.
Average display (though slightly below average brightness IIRC), mid range camera and dual front facing speakers (why don't more makers do this, HTC had a brilliant idea) round up the phone.
I'm personally weary of the Chinese Android phones at the moment after seeing mixed reports of battery life on forums, some people getting 10% drain an hour even idling. But for the reputation, the above plusses and the very reasonable price of around £150, the Moto G is a safe bet in my books.
Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
I like the old 4G one, but the 2014 is less good for me - too big for starters, though the dual speakers are a plus.
Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
I have the 4G one and love it. Managed to pick it up in Phones4U (:() for 139 notes so I was a happy bunny. Battery life is OK better than the Razr i that it replaced.
Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
My old HTC phone is going wonky, so have just ordered a Moto G 4G from Tesco on click and collect. Have to choose a case colour now :)
Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
If you work in an office/sedentary environment I'd agree that the Moto G is the one.
I'd have one, but unfortunately I'm working with heavy machinery, so my phone has a tendency to get lots of little knocks and bangs in my pocket.
For that reason I use an old, somewhat battered, Galaxy S2. It beats the Moto G in terms of slimness and weighs less, so less prone to being broken, but I agree that the Moto G is the better phone.
Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
The UK Motorola website states that the 2nd Gen availability is Pre-order only. Other review sites state that it is/should be available already.
Can anyone confirm the release date?

I actually just got off a live chat with a rep from the Motorola UK website and their own online store does not have it available. The lady said she couldn't tell me when it would be available but that it wouldn't be long. She then said to try Expansys and Amazon.
Bit odd, but there you go. Cheers!
I'm always a bit wary of buying anything as soon as it's released which has had me thinking to go for the 1st Gen phone which has proven itself. Still, the 8GB internal memory + MicroSD slot + newer OS and guaranteed upgrade + Dual SIM all as standard might persuade me otherwise.

The 4G model has a micro SD slot. I would hope it gets the upgrade to Android L.
I don't understand why they dropped 4G support on the 2014 model, though the screen was just too big for my pockets anyway.

Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
Thanks for your help and opinions guys. I've decided to jump in with the 2nd Gen Moto G. Due to arrive today or tomorrow. Will see how it goes!
Thanks.
Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
Only gripe I have atm with my 4G is that the bluetooth music streaming to the car stereo glitches about every half a minute. It was worse, but I turned on the experimental ART support instead of Dalvik and that has generally made the device smoother.
There was a problem with the microSD card I bought last week, but then on Sunday the phone got an update that fixed it :D
Overall I am very impressed.
Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
Ive not had an issue with Bluetooth I use it all the time in the car to stream audio.
Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
Moto G 2nd Gen has been delivered.
So far it's all love!
Larger than any phone I've had previously but the weight's good and the overall feel is nice.
Screen's gorgeous and the performance is decent. Battery life (at this brand new stage) is as advertised and after one day of use it got down to 40%.
No complaints so far. For a work phone where I'm using Google Apps, and might be checking news sites and reading a few other articles, etc. It's perfect.
Don't really play games on phones so no idea how it would be. But everything I've wanted so far, it's done well.
Re: Moto G - Any opinions?
I've used the Moto G and I think it's the best budget Android phone, especially if you don't care much about the camera and memory intensive apps (like games). It's got a solid build, decent screen resolution and good battery backup. The lack of a microSD card slot can be an issue, but since you only need it for communicating and work, I don't think you're going to be having space problems.
Just to be safe you could get a 16GB version.
