Thinking of picking up an e-reader...
Hey,
As above, wanting to get back into reading whilst at uni, and having used my mother's Kindle quite a lot over the summer whilst at home I'm wondering if an e-reader might be just the ticket.
Been told the Nook with Glowlight is very good for the price (£49), along with a couple of positive opinions of the paperwhite and a couple of Kobo models.
Any recommendations?

Paperwhite is great, have had kindles since the first one was released and couldn't go back to books for normal/holiday reading. Mrs has the new kindle voyager and its cracking, but I can't justify upgrading mine.

How much better is the voyage would you say?
I'm ok spending a decent amount on it since ideally I'll only be buying it once kind of thing.
The Nook seems to be cheap and half decent, not as good as some of the alternatives but less than half the price, that's quite a few books!

Wife has a Kindle, I have a nook. Wife like the kindle because it links directly to the store and works perfectly without any messing about.
I like the nook because I have it set up to use a range of stores. With hacked firmware its an android e-ink reader, so you can still use it with Kindle store, or any other android ebook stores. My one is set up to sync with my library on dropbox.

I don't mind putting a bit of effort in to get it working the way I'd like with the nook, it's more the hardware that doesn't match (most reviews saying the screen is better on the kindles, the lighting is more consistent etc), and a couple of the software things like the xray sound pretty cool, giving extra information, dictionary (although I think the nook has its own?).
Re: Thinking of picking up an e-reader...
I use a Kobo Glo as it will read multiple different formats and doesn't get me locked into the Amazon ecosphere. They're very solid machines, excellent screen and backlight and the newer variants have additional improvements. Having used the Kobo for over a year and had it side by side with numerous Kindles, I really see no reason why anyone would ever want to lock themselves up with a Kindle. If you really want to buy your books from Amazon, that's fine, you just pop them through a decent ebook manager (e.g. Caliber) and it will spit out the Amazon format book onto your own device in your preferred format. I pull books from multiple formats (inc some free ones I got from amazon and some gifted ones) onto my Kobo and it works really well.

I got my 1st Kindle in 2010 (3G Keyboard) and now on a 1st gen paperwhite. I travel a lot so when out of the country not having to lug a library of books around is a godsend and when not travelling just having it in my inside pocket for the commute is great.
As for what device to get it seems the latest kindles are always slightly above the others hardware wise but obviously you are on the Amazon eco-system but there are a few hacks kicking about and you can still use Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/ - Recommend for any device you are using) to put non-amazon content onto your kindle or you can just e-mail .mobi files directly to your @kindle.com address for your device to receive.

Kobo Aura HD here. Has been great / rock solid reliable, and the store is pretty good nowadays too. Plus you can see them in action in WH Smiths, a big bonus for me. Maybe not quite the range of Amazon, but not as locked in as them either. Easy to use with Calibre (3rd party ebook management software)
