I had the same, thought it was phishing as it was in dollars, then got an e-mail today saying I had £10 in credit at the UK app store. That's MOAR in my book...

I thought the same, I used the Appstore app and clicked "buy" on something but it wasn't clear if I had a promotional balance or not (just a 1-click purchase button). Ended up searching "amazon promotional balance" on Google and landed on the Amazon US store, signed in and finally found a link to check my promo balance - money was there.
Bought minecraft in the end (on the website), said $6.99 but ended up more like $8.69 as I guess the US site lists prices before sales tax/VAT @ 20%. Was hoping to grab GTA Vice City for $2.99 as well.. shame. Still Minecraft seems like a pleasant timewaster, no idea what I'm supposed to be doing on it though.
Fingers crossed they'll give me a tenner on the UK store as well..
Re: What Apps/Games to buy
Any more game recommendations? I decided to give android another stab as the hudl2 is SO cheap.

République got some good reviews.
New Worms 3, you can never go wrong with Worms!
Re: What Apps/Games to buy
Just as a point to note, today Amazon are offering a large number of games in their "free app of the day". Among them is fruit ninja, riptide GP2, Monopoly, clockwork tales and a fair amount more. This may possibly help choose where you would like to spend your £10. More on topic, I really enjoy monument valley because of its minimalist puzzles - and it is currently on the app store for £2.49.

Monument Valley was a free app of the day a month or 2 back - I thoroughly enjoyed it even though it was rather short

Limbo
Terra Battle
Osmos HD
Quell Reflect+
Scrambled Net
Sprinkle
Re: What Apps/Games to buy
There's almost always an android game humblebundle which is probably a good (cheap) way to try out loads of games. Limbo is a very good game, played that on PC so more than worthy of a tablet!
