I've done some digging on a new head unit and the thought crossed my mind "surely in 2014 there must be headunits where I can use whatever navigation or other apps from my smartphone on the screen in my car"
It looks like there are 2 options:
The Parrot Asteroid smart and Mirrorcast headunits.
The Parrot unit has it's own propriety market called the Asteroid market and it appears that for In car navigation you either use their own app or pay a subscription to another one.
It suffers from lots of Generation 1 type features such as completely resynching your phonebook every time you get in your car and you can't make calls until it's complete.
One useful feature is the ability to fit a reversing camera to it. Except it's unreliable and randomly disconnects.

The story's the same for all Mirrorcast head units as well. Unfinished. Plus the protocol rings the "totally unsuitable protocol for transferring video between a phone and a head unit". It uses VLC for video transmission. Great for a desktop but not great for smooth motion.
My conclusion. I'll steer clear. Life's too short to spend hours endlessly fiddling with things that should just work and have few useful extra features compared to a conventional head unit.
Any one know of a head unit with good Android music integration and bluetooth? It seems that most are Apple targeted.
