Android OS Mobile Data Usage Drain?

    Hi Guys,

Got a bit of a curious and frustrating situation. Some time over, I'd say, the last two months (maybe a little before) I've noticed that my monthly mobile data limit has been consumed more quickly than normal. When I've looked at the data usage section of the settings menu I can see that almost 25% of that usage come from steady usage by 'Android OS'.

Now here's the thing, it's background data that is being used and it seems to use it even if I blanket restrict background data and, even worse, if I'm on wifi. The only way I can stop it is by switching of mobile data entirely.

Now if the phone can run happily along with no data or just wifi, why on earth does it need to use the mobile data at all, and especially if wifi is active?

Haven't figured out the reason for it yet but it's rather frustrating.

    Anyone else seen this?

Actual data usage verified by your network or just what's reported in android?
Seems unusual, does data under the accounts section (so email\facebook etc) count as OS usage as its an account rather than an application?

Haven't verified it byte for byte but I am getting the data usage warning so it's more or less the same as I see here.

I'm not sure if accounts are under OS so I've just gone in and disabled all syncs for all accounts.

I'll see what happens. To my mind, if I have background data restricted then nothing should be utilising the mobile data unless I open it up manually. Although based on the data usage of my usual apps I should be fine to have the on constantly. It's the OS usage which is through the roof.

If it is the account sync then I'll see what happens if I leave that off and remove the restriction on background data.

Right, I've had everything un-synced etc. and I'm still getting background usage of the mobile data by the OS. It's not massive but it is there and it does add up over time.

It's beginning to really annoy me now because the only 'solution' I have is switching the mobile data off and on whenever I need access to emails etc.

I've had that turned off but it still used data.

    join Giff Gaff

the 3g is so poor you'll struggle to ever use the package you choose

    Serious help now:
install Advanced Task Killer and click it a couple of times per day.

Android has SO MUCH crap running in the back ground it hogs everything.

Like any Internet connection, it has to stay 'alive'. This means that it sends and receives what is called a 'handshake'. This is done, so both the phone and the gateway are alive and you can access whatever you want, when you want.
But, this also using up usage. As this happens every nanosecond. So no matter what is turned off, this will keep running. Unless you disable anything to do with the net.
As to Wifi, this works in a similar way, but you are only talking to a nearby wireless router. But the effect is still the same.
