My stepson's on the three PAYG deal, and he likes that he can afford to use data sometimes, but he's set up shortcuts so he can quickly turn data on and off as he needs it, which I assume means he found it a bit expensive to just leave it on all the time.
The question with PAYG is whether you want to be continually worrying about whether you're spending money on data or not. I used to be on a 500MB plan which I had to think very carefully about before I did anything with my phone, and had to make sure I always had wifi on for when I was within reception of a hotspot. Now I've got unlimited data I hardly ever bother with wifi - and being on 4G I've found on a number of occasions that the mobile data has been faster than using wifi through my home broadband!
