No worries
No worries

Edit: Read previous pages instead of asking stupid questions Rob.
Cheers kalneil, I'd read back a few pages and was disappointed when I read similar things , it's the only reason I'd 'upgrade' so it seems it isn't worth it
Not in the slightest. Yet.
It is nice to have mobile data - sort of a reassurance that I can call up maps or assistance etc. where-ever I am.. but that's tempered by battery/data allowance anxiety.
I can also see the benefit of the glorified PA - essentially combining data sources with location info and giving it all to evil companies so they can tell me I might have more traffic on my usual drive today... but I'm not yet opening up enough of my data for it to be useful. I'm starting on the paranoid before I open up - even location is turned off most of the time just for battery reasons. Once I've got more of a handle on real usage I may turn it on more.
I often wonder how I'd survive without a phone but when I leave it in the wardrobe of a weekend I rarely miss it at all.
Data anxiety can be partially eased by setting limits. Either from the Android settings or with a 3rd party app. I've used 3G Watchdog for ~5 years and so far I've never come close to the data allowances. It took a few months of usage before I started to open up things though, you're on the right track
Yeah Android has a pretty competent built-in data monitor from which you can set up a custom warning and limit. Also, depending what network you're with, they might have their own app to monitor data usage - I'm with Three and it seems to update fairly quickly.
Also, before that I was using Call Monitor NG which is fairly lightweight but since IIRC Android L it started having accuracy errors so I had to replace it and ended up with Callistics. But since I've been with Three I've been happy just using the Three app (my previous network Talkmobile didn't have one).
Likewise I started off not using much data at all and had a 500MB plan for years which I didn't max with app use/browsing/etc. I now have 2GB so I'm more comfortable doing things like Google Drive and application downloads without WiFi.
If you use Chrome and are OK having some images compressed you can enable 'data saver' in options which can save a significant amount of data too.
And all your traffic getting routed through google servers. </saracen>
Although I can (and often do on holiday and such) function quite happily without a smartphone, I do find it useful for so many things I find them useful enough that I wouldn't want to go back to dumbphones. Data wise I'm currently on 5.48 GB, about 2 weeks into my billing period, and will frequently hit over 10. Some of it could be repositioned to wifi (about 1.5GB on podcasts this month) but unlimited data is amazeballs.
As long as there's a switch I'm not too bothered about it, and no https traffic is routed that way, but for checking the likes of hexus and other news sites, it's not something that really bothers me at all. If you're at all concerned about this, you should probably also check Chrome's settings (as things like history, tabs, etc are synced by default), as well as those dotted around Android in general and perhaps just avoid Chrome and Android altogether depending on your level of concern. Personally it's when a user's options are removed that I'm most annoyed.
Oh and something else to note about Chrome - recent versions have moved tabs into the system app switcher which I personally think is a phenomenally bad idea, but you can thankfully disable that in settings.
