iPhone 6s review from an Android user (plus my thoughts on the Nexus 6P)

This is going to be a general thoughts on the 6s instead of a really long in depth review. I used the phone for over a week as my primary phone.

    Build Quality and Aesthetics

The aluminium is quite slippery and scuffs very easily. Added weight over last years’ model is a nice addition – makes it feel more durable. Buttons aren’t as clicky as on the S6. Because of this, it does make them quite cheap. Looks are a personal thing, but I think it’s the worst looking iPhone, and maybe flagship phone. Smooth rounded glass on the edge of the phone is great if you don’t use a case, but most will because how delicate the aluminium is. Too thin to be comfortable to hold for me. Extra thickness would have helped grip, and maybe less rounded sides. If you're not a fan of cases like me, you may be better of getting a vinyl skin for it (I'm sure most teenagers spend more money protecting their phones as opposed to other things!). Vibration motor is great, doesn’t rattle like so many other phones.

    Software

Mostly smooth and lag free. Occasional stutter. No quick settings, slow to navigate. Carrying out day to day tasks feels slower and not as intuitive as android. 3D touch is quite gimmicky most of the time, but when it is useful, it’s excellent. Good if you use safari, but I don’t because of lack of google integration. Apple pay is very quick and because it’s quicker for me to pull my phone out of my pocket, I find it better and safer than contactless. Camera app is over simplified. Have to go to settings to change video quality. Missed quite a few video opportunities because of it. Phone is unresponsive when first unlocked. Didn’t find the fingerprint sensor to be that accurate, nor as quick as everyone is saying. On the whole, smooth and an enjoyable experience, just not as much as Android for me personally (stock android). I find it significantly better than touchwiz, however. Navigating the system can be tiring and cumbersome, not intuitive at times. App designs aren’t continuous – many apps have different designs and it can, and does, make things confusing. The idea of Material design on Android is great, and while it may not have been perfected yet on the whole, the continuity of the design really helps with the experience.

    Camera

Sharp images, good detail, dynamic range, image stabilization for videos is good, video quality is fantastic. Best selfie camera I’ve used, the screen flash works really well. I don’t have anything bad to say really, which is a good thing. It doesn’t wow me in any way really, it just does its’ job, and does it well.

    Audio quality

Speaker sounds good. Nothing bad to say about it really. Having used front facing speakers on a 6P, it’s not something I’d go gaga over; a bit gimmicky if I’m honest. The 6s speaker is loud, clear and does what it needs to. No noticeable distortion when watching YouTube videos at comfortable listening level. Call quality is very good. Don’t currently have any headphones to try out with it, so couldn’t comment on how well it can drive them.

    Battery life

Varied. Some days good, some bad. Depends how much I’m using it. For a heavy day, it’d last until about 5 o’clock before power saving mode would ask to be activated (that's about the same as the 6P which has a battery twice the size!). That includes web browsing, using Spotify and a fair bit of messaging and calling. My OnePlus, before the Lollipop updates, would get me comfortably to the end of the day. There’s no nice way of saying it – the supplied charger is pants. Using the 12W charger from an iPad does improve this, however.

    Performance & Display

All the comments on how iOS handles RAM better is true, but it doesn’t make up for the fact that this still only has 2GB of RAM. It’s not enough on the 6s. Apps were reloading a lot, especially when web browsing. 3GB should be a given on a device this expensive. I get it’s not all about specs, but it IS noticeable. Admittedly, I am a power user, but then the 64GB version is £619. The fact I am a power user shouldn’t be an excuse. App reloading isn’t as smooth as Android either – I found it stuttered a fair bit, and once it had loaded, there was a delay as to when you can start using the app; as though it had captured what was last on there, but hadn’t reloaded the app yet. On the whole, very good. Web pages rendered very quickly, scrolling is smooth throughout. I think it’s mostly software that’s the issue here. Seems to be common place for many phones today, unfortunately.

I’ve used a QHD screen, a FHD screen and the one on the 6s is great. It’s sharp, bright and great in sunlight. I don’t feel a QHD screen is necessary on a phone, I haven’t once missed the sharpness from the S6 (though now I’ve used a 6P it does make a difference on larger phones). The OnePlus has an adequately sharp display. Same can be said for the 6s. Plus, it saves on battery life.

    Closing thoughts

It's strange, because while it does have its' downfalls, they're not so significant that I wouldn't recommend this phone. It does everything to a level which means I'm not frustrated all the time, like I have been with Android recently, and more specifically the 6P - more on that in a minute. Not long after the phone went back, I missed it, more than any Android phone I've used. Sure, the battery life wasn't great, performance was a bit iffy at times, but having bought a Nexus 6P, it seems it's common place for every phone now. And the iPhone does most things a lot better than Android since Lollipop.

The 6P is plagued with bugs, including the mobile radio active bug that was introduced with Lollipop! A year on, and it STILL hasn't been fixed. Wt*?! I've been a long time Android user, but it's just not as good any more, for me. It's behind in almost every way, and until Google changes that, I can't really recommend any Android phone.

Would anyone like to see a review for the 6P?

Re: iPhone 6s review from an Android user (plus my thoughts on the Nexus 6P)

I had the Nexus 6P for 10 days, and it didn't improve. The best screen on time I got was 5 hours and 57 minutes, but that was an unusual day for me - web browsing a lot and catching up on youtube videos over WiFi. Normal days would get me about 3. Long story short, it went back, and now I've got a 6s Plus. And while it has some bugs such as a touch ID bug where if you set it up during the setup process, the phone becomes unresponsive for a few seconds when unlocking and general animation lagging when transparency is on (it is by default), it's otherwise a much smoother and quicker experience. The Nexus lagged a lot, and I couldn't do anything about it. Changing launchers helped somewhat, but at times, there'd be a 2-3 second pause before an app opened, and then it's be a white screen for another second or so. App switching gave the same result.

I was just tired of Android and its' countless bugs and poor performance, even when you give a phone 8 cores and 3GB of RAM, it still re opens apps more than iOS and lags more...

Last thing - cannot tell the difference with the 1080P screen on the 6s Plus. Looks superb.
