    Receiving Duplicate SMS?

So I now have a Galaxy S5 (decided to swap Nexus 5X as it was annoying me too much), and I'm quite happy with it but one annoyance is I now seem to be receiving some SMS messages multiple times, usually two or three.

Looking online, it doesn't seem to be an uncommon occurrence for phones in general but does anyone know a decent way to fix it? I'm about to try a factory reset but I'm not sure if that will work, although that's what a lot of guides suggest. I had the SIM in my Nexus 4 previously and it seemed fine.

    Thanks

    Re: Receiving Duplicate SMS?

Right, tried a factory reset and a re-flash through Kies and it's still happening with annoying frequency. Has anyone else encountered this issue? It's really ticking me off now.

As I said the SIM seemed fine in my Nexus 4 but it doesn't seem likely to be a hardware problem, but I think the firmware re-flash also does the modem so I'm not sure what else it could be? I'm also getting really tired of setting my phone back up after factory resetting it!

Ask your carrier? Maybe you can get through to something like '3rd line support' where they may have come across this problem already...

    Re: Receiving Duplicate SMS?

I got through to second line support at Three, and while she tried to help she said it's more than likely the device as it didn't happen on my previous phone (although that didn't use LTE so I'm not sure if that could be a factor) and I'm inclined to agree TBH.

I mean surely other people have this device on the same network and don't have this problem? My thinking is that it could be a bug in the modem/baseband firmware but despite a lot of searching I can't find any real mention of the issue online.

Are the messages sent from an iphone?

Its not uncommon for me to receive multiple copies of the same message when they are from iphone owners.....

    Re: Receiving Duplicate SMS?

I had this with my S5 and it was iphone users that used to send to me via imessage when I had an iphone.

They need to delete you and re add you so that it doesnt link with imessage

    Re: Receiving Duplicate SMS?

Nah there doesn't seem to be any pattern to the sending devices - most are Android, at least two are Blackberry and a a couple more on iPhone. I've also not had an iPhone myself so it shouldn't be the iMessage thing.

Annoyingly it's one of those intermittent problems - it can go a dozen messages fine, then all of a sudden I get the same message through a load of times, sitting in the same location etc. It only seemed to be happening after the device was idle for a while but I think that was just co-incidence as it's happened a load of times while I've been using it now.

It must be a fairly uncommon issue as while the people I've spoken to have had it happen maybe a couple of times (I have myself in the past), no-one seems to have had it happen close to the frequency it's happening with me, and out of them it mostly seems to be down to having multiple messaging apps installed and fairly repeatable.

Why must I get the most random, bizarre problems on things?

    Re: Receiving Duplicate SMS?

I had this a few years ago with Three, only company it ever happened with, never did find out why it was happening and "support" on the matter was next to nothing.

    Re: Receiving Duplicate SMS?

I've had it once or twice in the past on other networks but it's so frequent I'm putting my phone on silent now or I keep checking it only to see it's the same message.

Did you ever solve it or did it stop happening?

    Re: Receiving Duplicate SMS?

It was on Three and on the iPhone 4s at the time, I changed both the network and phone and it never happened again. Unfortunately never could work out what was causing but I feel your pain as it was driving me up the wall, interestingly though at the same time when I was sending other people messages they were also getting them duplicated or even received it 3 or 4 times.

    Re: Receiving Duplicate SMS?

Hopefully I won't have to go to the extremes of changing phone and network. But I do seem to have hit a wall with Three and Samsung's support with Three saying it's probably the phone as I can't replicate it on my Nexus 4, and Samsung saying it could be the phone but to send it for a lengthy repair. And if friends' experience of MFR phone 'repairs' are anything to go by that probably means a factory reset and quick diagnostic which isn't likely to fix it as I've already tried that along with a re-flash...

Did you get a different phone entirely or another 4s?

    Re: Receiving Duplicate SMS?

Different phone mate, went to a Galaxy S3 at the time I think?

I did go down various routes trying to solve the issue as it was really annoying me, but I had Three saying it must be the phone and Apple saying it must be the network, seemed like a glitch and no-one really knew why it happened.

    Re: Receiving Duplicate SMS?

Well at least in my case Samsung seem to be admitting it's possibly the phone. I just find it hard to accept that it's either a network or model-specific hardware issue - I mean surely people other than myself have the same combination of phone and network! It's one of the most popular phones after all.
