    Question on Mobile Phone Operators

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little bit about how mobile phone operator works.

    1. What is the minimum setup requirements to start-up (I imagine there are lots of infrastrutures - to provide coverage)?

    2. How does virtual network work? Do they buy licences from "real" operators? If that is the case, what else do they need to pay?

    3. How many operators are there in the UK right now? How many are "real" and how many are virtual networks?

    Thanks.

as for 1 and 2 im not sure of that side of things

in the uk, i know of these networks

virgin, tesco, mmo2, vodafone, orange, tmobile, fresh, 3 (hutchinson)

might be 1 or 2 more i cant remember, but there the main ones, however there are only 4 - possibly 5 real networks, orange, voda, o2 and tmobile, and 3

out of them 3 is a seminetwork, its not completly its own, the 3g content is run by itself, however the 2g (i.e. normal calls, anything non 3g) is run off the o2 backbone

the rest, tesco, virgin, fresh are all virtual networks, tesco runs off o2, virgin runs off t mobile and i think fresh is also another 02
