Re: Anyone got a Xiaomi phone yet ?

I picked up a Redmi Note 3 (the one with a hex-core Snapdragon and 32GB storage) earlier this year whilst in Singapore. Very fast, nice screen, decent GPU, outrageous battery life, decent camera, dual sim system works well... honestly, I love the damn thing but as of yet, I haven't been able to get the latest update to work. It just keeps saying update failed

I mostly use it as a work phone, and I have had a lot of time off, so in fairness to the phone I haven't really put a lot of extra effort into sorting it out yet. Im sure I will get it figured out.

I would definitely recomend the phone to anyone who is a bit techy, but otherwise, stick to UK models.

Yep that's the one i got, though it's the Kate version rather than Kenzo so it has extra LTE bands and will work on Vodafone in the UK. Got my unlock code today as well so going to try & unlock the bootloader in the next day or so.

Re: Anyone got a Xiaomi phone yet ?

I've had/bought quite a few Chinese phones such as the Xiaomi Mi3, Mi4, Mi Note and also Meizu MX4, ZTE Nubia Z5S, ZUK Z2 and I can say I've actually had good experiences with all of them.

I actually really like Xiaomi phones because I just like the way the UI looks. I find stock android just simply too ugly and I actually think the MIUI looks better than iOS too.

Only reason I didn't upgrade to another Xiaomi phone was because I'm rather picky with phones. I want the slimmest bezels (no Sonys or HTCs then) with a front fingerprint sensor that isn't a physical home button (no Samsungs) without on screen buttons (no LGs or Huaweis) which didn't leave me with much choice. Went for the OnePlus 3 and I've gotta say other than the stock Android look and the battery life, it's been a pretty perfect phone.

I would like to have my hands on a Mi Mix though! I was waiting for ages for a successor to the Mi Note as that was a very good phone with amazing audio performance, a nice screen (only 1080p but it was a very good panel) and good performance for its time but I didn't want to wait long enough. Seems I didn't miss out on much though as the Mi Note 2 has massive bezels so it's actually rather normal sized/big for a 5.7" phone. The Samsung S7 Edge and Note 7 would have been perfect if they didn't have a physical home button (I have small hands so it's easy to just tap the home button if it's capacitive as opposed to pressing a physical home button). Likewise the Mi5 and Mi5S do not really fit what I wanted either.

I am eyeing up the ZUK Edge though but I can't really find any reason to change from my OnePlus 3 to the ZUK Edge except that I find flatter phones easier to hold and aesthetically it's more pleasing due to the smaller bezels. I think ZUI is also quite close to MIUI too so maybe I found myself a reason...

See im not 100% sure which version I have, so I dont know what file to download to manually set the update going. Dont want to brick the damn thing!

(yes I know I can probably find out fairly easily by going off the model number in device info, but im lazy...)

You must be opposite of me then. I hate MIUI with a passion. Far too frustrating - blocking everything useful until you realise something's not working and dig through permissions and auto start settings to get it working. I only wish I could get a decent cyanogen ROM for my note 2 - unfortunately very unstable due to the stupid MediaTek chip. I'm counting the days tell I can replace it and I'd rather go with an under spec'ed g4 than keep my more powerful note 2 right now... (I desperately loved my nexus 5 and just wish there was a sensible replacement from Google. The Pixels are a joke for the price. I think the N5 spoiled me with a clean Android experience.)

Just got a Huawei P9 Lite for someone I know, and for £125 it is an awesome phone. NFC,3GB of RAM,1080P display,UK warranty, etc for the price is great value.

If you want a clean Android experience the Motorola phones like the Moto G ship with stock Android.

Yes that was why I commented about the under spec'd G4... Forgot about the LG model of the same name that might have caused confusion.

Kate is 152MM long, Kenzo is only 150mm. There is also an app you can download I think which confirms the codename, trouble is I cant remember which one it is now.

Torn between a Moto G4 and a Redmi. My friend just got a Redmi and thinks its amazingly powerful for the money. He had to wait 3 weeks for it to arrive from Hong Kong though. Not sure it's worth the hassle.

Re: Anyone got a Xiaomi phone yet ?

My redmi note 2 continues to get worse 3 months on. Random loudspeaker calls that don't go 'loud', phone calls magically disappearing into the status bar, 'phone to face' proximity sensor failing to detect my face when making a call 20% of the time, wifi not disconnecting when out of range for up to 5 minutes, Random battery drainage that disappears if you pull battery and refit plus other MIUI niggles. Personally it was a bargain for the price but I'm not trying this experiment again - I'd rather have lower spec and better OS support next time. Just waiting for any excuse to replace it now. Hope you guys have better luck with the new models without mediatek chips in but not risking MIUI/Xiaomi or Mediatek again.

Thankfully my Redmi Note 3 SE is the opposite and with Lineage OS on it it's very stable. However it's the Snapdragon version. My UMI Super, which is Mediatek based, well lets just say it has issues....many issues.
