    Hp 2210 Pda

All you PDA know it alls, thinking about getting one of these...

Do they come recommended from anyone, anything I should take note of before buying one.

If you don't like it what else do you recommend. I'm new to the PDA game so any info is good info to me atm...

edit: looking at GPS modules as well, need something compatable with TomTom stuff (as I think it looks the best, again I could be way of the mark!) and the above PDA of course.

Well a couple of people I work with have them and they seem to happy with them. They both use tomtom, wired and bluetooth flavours. The only gripe they have had is the same for all ppc users in that the amount of memory that ships as standard is poor. Nowadays large storage cards are cheap enough and this model has tha advantage of having 2 expansion slots.

It's pretty compact too and it will work with the toys I posted in another thread.

Its just about the most popular PDA for satnav due to the price and the number of storage / conection options it has. If you ar looking at satnav you would be able to get the most help with this model.

Working from memory 2210 has bluetooth, so any bluetooth modules should work. I have a fortuna clipon that i use with my Tosh, have found this to b excellent. The clipon uses a standard nokia battery so if the original dies its cheap to replace. Some systems use rechargeable AA's, they have the benefit of being easy to find short term replacements. have a look at http://www.pocketgpsworld.com for reviews of indevidual units, tbh they give much the same accuracy as each other. I have fitted a wired system to my dads landrover, this can be a good solution if you hide the wires, as you dont have to bother with chargers etc. Keep meaning to take a photo of my rig, will try and do it over weekend.

Quick note if you want a cheap wifi adapter look at the ebuyer value one, £23 and it works a treat I use my one down the pub a lot.

Thanks for the info guys... been looking at the Dell Axim X50v on ebay as well, seems to be around 60-70 quid more on average, not sure if its worth the extra £££ though.

It does seem that although there is a lot of choice in terms of brands in the PDA market they are all based on the same tech.

My mate upgraded from a 2210 to an X50v. As far as I can see the only merits are the VGA display and integrated Wifi

Does a VGA screen make much difference when driving in your car? Easier to read etc..

I'm stuck in two minds as I would like the higher res but without seeing the two units side by side I don't know how much difference I'm gonna notice during actual use.

Hmm VGA screens on a handheld, have a look at some of the PDA forums and see the rows this causes.

I've got the HP rx3715, which doesn't have a VGA screen, I have no problems at all reading the screen at any time. I spend a lot of time away from home so I convert the odd film or two to watch and it's more than acceptable for watching a 2 hour film on.

GPS pah, it talks to me so I don't need to see the screen

I just had a quick look and the 3715 is only £10 more than the 2210 if bought from expansys. The 3715 has wifi built in.

I think the 2210 is the best bet now. The extra doesn't seem to be worth it imo. Probably best that I spend less rather than more on my first PDA and then when/if the time comes that I want another I can get a VGA jobby then.

Deffo think it would be good for in car gps, movies etc. Can you buy TV tuner cards? That would be cool also.

IMHO, VGA screens look absolutely lovely at 240x320 res. It's so much clearer and more detailed. However at 480x640 I found I could barely see and touch the options on the screen!!

Perhaps it's meant for spreadsheet or word processing or something. Web browsing worked quite well.

This was all on my friend's X50v.

I'm quite happy with my 2210 still. It navigates me, allows me internet/email/msn around the house, the odd game, HTPC remote control, etc. It's great

GPS isn't any better on VGA because TomTom can't take advantage of it. Yes TV tuner cards are available. Dell were giving them away with their X50v as a promotion (not sure if it's still running). The one my friend got looked a bit crap though... It's huge, needs AAA batteries of it's own, etc.

Most PDA's have a custome connection, its the same as the one used to sync the PDA to a PC, you just buy a cable that plugs the GPS in to the PDA and the power source. The benefit of this system is that you just need to change the cable if you change PDA. Ther are a couple of mounts that have the adapters built in, so you just sit the pda in to the mount and its connected to power and the GPS.

Do you know of any wired recievers that could be powered through the Arkon mount.

Making sure everything is compatable is doing my head in!
