Excel pretty much mandates a PocketPC based device. If you're going to be using it for Internet access in combination with, say, a GPRS/3Gmobile phone, Bluetooth'd be useful (on the phone as well, naturally). Spreadsheets are a pain on a small display, so one with VGA res rather than QVGA would be desirable (four times the pixels) and a decent graphics adapter for games, one that can handle 3D stuff. That means the Dell Axim X50v. Pricey at about £330, and Dell don't have any in stock, but Expansys reckon they can get them in 8 days - http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=DELL_AXIM_X50V.
Rumours were that the X50v was shorting out when connecting to its docking station, so that could be why they have been taken down...

Nah, they're still on sale in the US and they're still available from Expansys - the problem's been a shortage of the VGA screens, which (I understand) will be sorted mid-March. Chap I know here has an X50v, and if it were shorting, you'd have heard the screams in Tibet.
Thanks mate I will look into it.

haha
ah well at least it aint a serious prob with them then.
I'm looking at getting a HP h2210 atm. The VGA alternatives are too expensive.

On response of the x50v shorting problem :

I've recently cancelled my order with Dell because of this. I don't want to take the risk.
wow its worse than I thought, some people there are report that it frys their mobo. ouch.

I would hold of on the x50v imo and look at the alternatives around the latest rom upgrate seems to have a problem with CF cards loosing connection every hour or so and having to reinsert the card for it to be found, the other dissapointment with the x50v is the poor batterly life even with bt/wifi and screen brightness down it still sucks the battery quick (that and dell issues the device with a small battery comared with others) if you are after a vga device the Hp4700 and FS Loox720 are both great pda's.
whats your budget on a device, have you any prefences on palm or windows os?
If anyone's interested in seeing reviews of the x50v, there's one up here:

i would choose a hp4700 over the x50v just for the software provided and build quality of the device
palm pilots are cool as you like although they have been left behind a bit.
I recently upgraded to an Ipaq and to be honest, if you get an OK spec one its pretty impressive.
FYI: I got the HP4700 its great

true dont put the good olde palm down they as a pim are still the leaders but syncing can be a pain and multimedia and wireless dont just work (like windows mobile) but for the price of the device a Zodiac 2 can be had for a steal at 150 notes now from pcworld (was selling at 349 on release 4 months ago) it was aimed at a gaming device with titles just for the zod but its still palmos so u can run all games/apps on it like a normal palm. with emulation software as ljz and 2 sd card slots as a retro emu handheld it carnt be beat imo.
im not being go m$ but as being a long time palm owner and making the change im glad i did.
Ive got the HP HX4700 had it since day one and Ive got to say its a very nice piece of kit. One little problem with it tho. When it runs out of battery it looses all the stored info i.e contacts, emails etc etc.
I thought you were meant to store important stuff like that to the non-volatile memory. I thinl the 4700 has around 80meg of this...
