How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
Hello people
I have, in my top drawer at HEXUS towers, an Acer Liquid Z630.
I updated it on wifi, charged it fully and then left it , screen off, but still on wifi.
It has NO sim card so has no network coverage
It has no apps except the default stuff, and becaue it's NOT signed into a Google account, I don't think it's doing much.
Question : how long will it last before it goes flat? It's only use is me checking it by activating the screen daily
Have a guess - :-)

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
28 days, 5 hours and 3 minutes.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
If there is no heating at night, I'd go for 10days.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
Specs reckon 1030 hours, which I scoffed at until I got to the battery size ... 4000mAh! That's huge! My KEYone only has 3505 mAh and that has lasted over 3 days with light usage and full mobile connection before.
Now, I'm sceptical it's going to manage the 42+ days the specs reckon it could, but I suspect it'll go for .... oooh, let's say ... 6 days 10 hours.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
My Moto E 2nd Gen has a 2390mAh battery and lasts 12 days easily on standby (network connection only). So I would guess yours would be 24 days if it isn't connected to the network.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
First few answers very optimistic imo. I'm going with 4-5 days. The answer may change if you can turn it onto airplane mode, don't know about their OS but you can then turn on wifi, reason being that it may search for signal even without a sim card? In which case it will burn through battery faster than if it had a sim and signal. With a big battery as described maybe 10 days if that's not the case though?

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
Started on 23rd March at 9:30am
Died this am (4th April just after 10am)
So just over 12 days :)
I've very impressed I have to say. It's hardly a clean Android install and has loads of tat pre installed.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
Should I repeat it, but with Wifi off?
-
Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
I'd be interested if you ran the test with WiFi off, but a SIM in and the phone set to 2G with no data. See if you can match the 'old days' when you can go at least a week between charges on a phone with a black and white screen. :P

If I can do it with a battery nearly half the size, it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
My iPad Air 2, which is over 3 years old now, and has never ever been switched off other than for software updates, still lasts me over a month on a single charge - with no battery saving tech going on. Wifi enabled, 4G enabled, sounds enabled...

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
I don't have a sim card that I can use
Experiment re started this am
5/4/18 11:14am Full Charge, Wifi OFF....we shall see

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
9/4/18 1:15PM UPDATE
84% Battery
-
Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
If it continues to deplete at a steady rate, looks like you're going to get around 25 days, not bad :)

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
Aye my old S2 has been in my draw after a reset and before deciding what to do with it. A month later it still had charge.
The biggest eater I find is just having a phone connected to wifi, be it being actively used or not.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
20/4/18 12:31 update
44% battery remaining

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
25/4/18 10:23 am
23% battery remaining

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
I wonder if it would be interesting to check the charge at the same time every day, then plot the battery percentage on a chart. If the line isn't straight, what caused that?
Surely it should be straight, because the battery drain will never change.
50% is exactly half of 100%, but is 50% battery exactly between the time of unplugging it from the charger to the time of death?
-
Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
It might not be linear solely because the number reported is intentionally inaccurate, I've been led to believe.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
2 pages?
Charts and graphs?
Half tempted to do a similar thread, on how long it takes paint to dry... I'd bet on getting at least three Hexites thoroughly riveted throughout the thread, as well as half my company managers!!

Depends on what the drain is, whether it is constant current or power, or something in between. Cells are rated in Amp Hours (Ah), i.e. a 4Ah cell should provide 4A for an hour before dying. However, the voltage will vary between that period (normally max 4.2V and min 3.0V, but can vary on chemistry), and that discharge is not linear. Therefore, if you wanted say 4W, then you would draw <1A to start with and grow to 1.3A towards the end, meaning your SOC would discharge slower at the start and quicken at the end. Of course, manufacturers can counter that with software to allow for things like that to try and make it linear, plus they also are unlikely to run a cell to absolute max and min voltages (probably 20-80%) to maintain a higher cell life.

i'm tempted to run a long term torture test on anyone who uses a double T in their name, with jump leads and electroloyte, wasps, sunshine and a magnifiying glass... i think that would be great too :)

Ooh baby.... !!
How much per hour do I have to pay for this service, anyway? Is it tax-deductible? :)
Seriously, though, is this not how they already established the manufacturer's quoted 'maximum standby time' for the manuel?

dunno, that's what I'm finding interesting :)

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
Monday 30/4/18 10:15am
It just gasped it's last
I clicked the button to bring the screen up, it lit... and then went black
Wasn't with me over the weekend so I don't know when it actually dropped low enough to be useless but still.. that's some impressive battery life
5/4 to 30/4

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
So now put in a sim, turn on WiFi and BT and put it in a tin box so it is constantly searching for a signal, and see how long it last then.

pick up a free pay as you go sim, don't actually register or put money on it. Should still try to constantly handshake with networks.
Personally I've given up on wifi on my phone, that way it generally lasts me a week, but I don't really do much on my phone.

And your point is? :P

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
If you look at the power draw statistics for various parts in the phone its usually the screen, followed by the wireless components which draw the most power. Its why if you use a mapping utility or play any game which uses the modem a lot(like Pokemon Go or Ingress) it hammers battery life.

Usually though the expiration date is quite a few years away, so in theory, they could still work 10 years later.
I’m afraid that is incorrect. Different battery chemistries have different characteristics. Duracell’s of the type you described are primary cells and cannot be re- charged and they self discharge over time.
Cellphone batteries are lithium ion secondary cells. They have very low self discharge and can be recharged many times - typically >500 , although they do lose capacity over time.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
In this case, I think 12 days/ 5 hours (Assumption)

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
My s6's battery would probably die in a single day just on standby, it's quite shocking,

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
4 Days 7 hours in mine....

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
Generally speaking, it can be used for 3 hours under full charge.
-
Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
It should last about 20 days if not signed into any email or similar service that requires constant refresh
-
Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
For my iPhone 6,The battery only lasts 24 hours if i don't use it.

OMG,this is the longest battery life I've ever seen. My phone only lasts 24 hours.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
Alcatel 3, 5.5" screen, hardly any calls, no browsing, lots of reminders, some SMS, will do 7 - 8 days on a 3Ah battery. Cost £90 from Argos.

Re: How long would a smart phone charge last, with no use?
About 2 weeks, that's average time I got for a spare phone when left in the draw unused.
