Just to add - I recently got the Huawei M5 10" from Amazon for £250. For the money, it's excellent, to be honest.

However, with tablets for Android, you're always buying old tech.

I went for the Acer a3-a50

There wasn't a perfect tablet, not at any price. This one leaned towards brute CPU power with a pair of 2.1GHz A72 cores on top of the low power A53 cores and enough ram to not be waiting for reads from flash. The wife loves the 10" screen compared to the old Hudl 2.

The battery was gone in the Hudl which was a cheap repair which didn't take long, yet now it is working it just reminds me why she needed a new tablet. Might be handy in the current months for keeping hands warm though, even if it is utterly useless at a tablet

I have an ancient tablet that I put LineageOS on (minimal install, no Google apps/play services present,) thats connected as the input source for some good (but "dumb",) speakers. It serves as a touch screen interface to my home servers music library.

A friend of mine has done something similar just with a browser on and uses it in the kitchen for following online recipes.

I was actually considering putting it into my kit car. Build some hinges that go under the dashboard so it can hinge down and act as satnav, maybe a reversing camera too. That would make the pitiful battery life less of a problem, but for a supposedly quite powerful Atom chip the thing is just awful to use so I don't think i'll bother. The Hudl tablets (I have a Hudl 1 somewhere as well) seem unsupported by the rom community from what I have seen. Guess they are too locked down or drivers just aren't available.

I think it's the Intel chips they use. Something of similar vintage from the likes of Cex would do it though.

Could shell out for a cheap Bluetooth odb reader and use the live dials feature of Torque as well if you want to know things like boost pressure etc.

Whilst that would be fun, it would involve replacing the engine with one newer than 1989

I think if i was going to bother I would just buy a new tablet tbh. You can get them fairly cheap, the only worry being lack of GPS as it often isn't listed as a feature. I would have to add a 3G dongle as well to get the maps to update which I have if I can power the tablet via a usb hub, a Three pay as you go sim would be fine. Not a trivial project, and I think there are others that are more important. Still haven't got a working 3D printed intake hose yet, though I think the last print can be fixed with a soldering iron (there are a couple of bits where the wall didn't print well so would leak un-metered air if I tried to use it. Then there's the wonky water temperature guage...

Fair enough, seems like a strong choice which should last a while due to the processor being quite handy
