Where to sell an old phone...
Hi Folks,
My daughter has an iPhone SE 1st edition 128GB. It's spent its whole life in a lifeproof case so it's immaculate BUT it needs a new battery. Is it worth replacing the battery before I sell it, and where's the best place to offload it? I don't really want to use eBay, purely because of the chancers....
To be clear, I am not trying to sell it here, just wondering whether it's even worth bothering.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
Have you checked cex for a quick sale? I supposedly swing eBay prices may give an indication of its real worth. Never sold one myself.
Edit; it does power on?

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
Yeah. Powers on but the battery goes dead very quickly. Might give CeX a go.
Thanks..

Also can check https://www.compareandrecycle.co.uk/ as a comparison point

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
CEX don't like dead batteries. If you swap in a new one, you'll easily recoup the investment.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
I have mine folded at home in a box. There is a pile of rubbish. I don't know why they are, they don't even turn on. One day I'll throw it all away. But not yet, they are interesting as a memory. When free space is required, then I will already make a decision on the disposal of trash.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
Replace the battery and then flog it on CEX or Music Magpie. MM usually give better prices than CEX. If you want to go the forum route then it's probably AVForums or the like.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
£47 from music magpie. Probably £30 to replace the battery. Think I'll just bung it on eBay for spares or repairs.....

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
Is that £47 before the battery is replaced or after?

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
This is the easiest thing. It depends on 2 things — the country you reside in, and the price you want to get for your phone. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of the sites that place these ads about selling things. As for me, eBay is the coolest decision here.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
Although not the best price on that device, have used GoodBuyTech before and can vouch for them being a good company to do business with.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
I find MusicMagpie to be really good. especially if you can afford to wait and sign-up to their newsletter. They often send 10% additional code that you can use. Pretty sweet deal IMO.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
I've used Envirofone a few times, they're usually pretty fairly priced.
I noticed there are some 'newer' recycle companies popping up who offer a small chunk more, but after trying to use them twice with friends/family, they get the phones and then low-ball claiming there is some damage or light scratch marks. They basically expect a brand new phone it seems to pay the advertised recycle price.
Whereas with Envirofone, I sent my brother in laws iPhone last year that the screen was totally screwed on - they still paid the full price for it! I was expecting him to get the price chucked down but they didn't.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
I can also vouch for musicmagpie. Sold a few phones and it was really easy and quick. See the prices they are willing to buy and if you are satisfied with it go for it!

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
Musicmagpie have been decent and I’ve had no hassles with them when I got rid of some old apple devices....
-
Re: Where to sell an old phone...
Cex and Musicmagpie is the two best ones in my books. Good luck..
-
Re: Where to sell an old phone...
+1 for CEX sold many electronics through them and got a decent price out of it. If you're willing to do a little bit of work you can try ebay, you may get a little bit more cash out of it if you're lucky.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
Music Magpie are pretty good - the usually have code for an extra few percent on the offered price
-
Re: Where to sell an old phone...
If I send a phone to MusicMagpie do they pay the price they say or will the examine it and then offer a lower price?
I normally wouldn't ask but as it's a postal one it isn't as simple as handing it back to you if you don't like the price. Who pays to send it back to you if you refuse the lower price?
-
Re: Where to sell an old phone...
They will likely offer a lower price if what I read on the interweb is correct.
Earlier this year I felt like a new phone and took a gamble on a Realmi 6 Pro on ebay. Great phone, only problem is it bricked itself and died with an update after having it for 2 months (same year it was released). I am very disappointed my new phone is basically the same and I had to pay for both

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
eBay if you're feeling brave. The chance of fraudulent buyers is high though.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
I always use CeX if possible, they give decent prices on some phones, and it's an easy sale. Alternatively you could try sites like Facebook marketplace or gumtree.
There's also eBay but I worry about being scammed by buyers - eBay will almost always side with the buyer in any dispute, and while most buyers are fine, it can be risky.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
Wait for £1 ebay fee promo (this weekend) and put it on an auction, of course be cautious and take lots of pictures/proof of postage when you send it :)
-
Re: Where to sell an old phone...
I always go with ebay if I don't know someone local /friends /family who want a phone.
Just put everything in the details that you can possibly think of and always cover yourself with (Spares and Repair) in the description. Never a problem then for myself.

Re: Where to sell an old phone...
I know you don't want to sell on on eBay, but the price difference is in my opinion usually worth the slightly higher risk: but wait for maximum £1 selling fees you'll get a much better price than the re-cycling companies from my experience.
if you really dont want to eBay, can I advise Facebook marketplace these days (as FB has pretty much killed off Gumtree from what I can tell). I sell most of my highest risk items on there and have always had very high traffic to the listings. 100% worth a look if you haven't already.
