I dont use my phone abroad, and i'm about to get out of my current vodafone contract.
Is there a 'top' network in the UK right now? Or are they all about even? Or one thats considerably worse? you get the point

T-Mobile for me. Never had a problem.
Was with them initially then went to O2, then Orange and back again. Others in the family have Three and I had a vodafone pay-go.
All through that I prefer the deals offered by the T-Mobile, not to mention that everywhere that I have gone, except for one spot in mid-Wales T-Mobile has very good coverage.
The same cannot be said about the rest of them. I have had no real problems with O2 or Voda - but Orange has weak coverage/blackspots around a lot of the places that I go to/work in/live in.
Two networks that I would not sign up with - Orange & Three. The rest I may consider - with T-Mobile topping the list.

Vodafone - good range of tariffs, good customer service.
I am however mightily tempted by the Web'n'Walk packages on T-Mobile, as they cut the cost of mobile browsing significantly.
I think O2 are the leaders.
Three's service is okay, but try speaking to CS and you'll struggle/get fobbed off. Same with Orange.
Vodafone are overpriced.
T Mobile just don't seem to want you.
Vodafone are still the best network out there imo, and the majority of people tend to agree. Great coverage, good customer service..their only problem is that they are the most expensive - but you tend to get what you pay for!
02 have apparently gotten better over the years, but their coverage is pretty poor out of the cities and their name is just so tarnised in my book that I could never reccomend them to anyway.
As Vini said T-mobile just don't seem to care at all, its like they can't be bothered with you.
Orange..well I'm on orange and have had no problems with this particular contract, but unless they offer you a great deal I wouldn't bother with this..not since they got bought out.
Three - actually a really good network, their support is top notch these days for the most part, great 3g coverage nationwide, and very cheap price plans. The biggest problem with three is the lack of good mobiles - they have nothing on window mobile for example, and just stock the "popular" phones.
This is though that I bet everyone here will give you a different opinion, as it all depends on what experience you have had with a particular network. If I could afford it I would still go with voda tho
I'd recommend O2. Best compromise between coverage, quality and customer service in my experience.
I was on O2 for a terrible year, not because their customer service was bad or anything, but because they had nearly no coverage of my house. I live in London, not down the side of a mountain or anything, so it was a bit of a shock, and I vowed to always check reception in my home/work/play locations when signing up in future.
Now v happy with T-mob, for the specific reason that I have unlimited 3G internet for £7.50 a month, which I cane relentlessly!
As people have alluded to above, it seems to depend a lot on where you are as to what quality of signal you'll get. Might be handy if someone recommended a website to check that sort of thing? Obviously the various providers have their own signal maps but I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them!
been with both Voda & O2 & my mother is with T-Mobile & no probs with any.
Friends with Orange & 3 have had probe though.
coverage with T-Mobile i've found far better than with O2 or vodafone (3G). This is mostly in london.
Their web n walk data tarrif is excellent, hence why i'm banging on about how good their coverage is.
customer service, dosen't take too long to get through too them, got them to do a PAC xfer quite quickly.
There who i'm with now and given the web n walk as a smartphone user, i'm not going anywhere else, anytime soon.

that's £7.50 on top of your monthly call tariff with t-mobile Web'n'Walk
Web'n'walk Phone Tariff - T-Mobile
Information there about the tariffs you can go for. I think personally flext 30 and 35 with web and walk are the ones there worth going for.
Orange have been pretty good for me so far. The cheapest I've found. I'm on £25 a month, with an LG Viewty, and I get 600 minutes and unlimited texts. Signal's pretty good everywhere I go as well.
I think i'm going to go for this deal:
Sony Ericsson K810i on T-Mobile Flext 35 (12mths) at BuyMobilePhones.net
i dont like the idea of 12mth contracts, and i think the K810 is a more reliable phone than the k850, prefer the camera on it too
The only other option being 18 and 24 month contracts - 12 month contracts are the least of the evils when you get a new phone with it.
If you dont want a new phone, you can negotiate to get contract prices lowered or go for something like the O2 simplicity.
