    Exclamation possible phone scam

mods i didnt know where else to put this if innapropriate then delete plz

was just sent this from a m8t

There is yet another scam operating on mobile phones. A missed call comes
    up.
The number is 0709 020 3840, the last four numbers may vary, but certainly
    the
first four will remain the same. If you call this number back you will be
    charged £50 per minute.

People have complained about their phone bills, once they have realized
    the cost
of the call, but apparently this is completely legal.

So beware, do not call back numbers beginning with '0709'.

PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION ONTO YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS.

dont know if real or not but thought id share

Unless the person at the other end picks up, it isn't going to cost you anything anyway.

And all premium rate numbers start with 090.

07XXX is reserved for mobiles only, so the very worst charge you could get is equivalent to calls you make to any other network other than your own, unless you have x-network minutes.

At least, thats the way its been

The most a premium rate number can charge is £1.50/minute.

from another forum they actually said its:

mobiloe rang but as soon as he answered it disconnected, he checked his call register and the number came up as 00709*********, this morning I had the same thing happen, same code but different number.
with the answer making much more sense... 00 is the international dialing code, 70 is a country code, the rest of it is a local number for that country.

There's just two problems with that:

    - Generally an incoming call from another country will come up as "Number Withheld" or "Number Unknown"
    - Most phones won't display a missed call for a number that's calling for the first time, since it's probably someone who has dialled the wrong number

    Hoax, in my opinion.

    Maybe & Wrong.

    - Calls from another country will most propably show as 'International Call'
    - I've never seen a phone that wont show a missed call from ANY number.

070xx numbers are charged at BT 'K' rates. These cost 12.5/25/37.5p per minute depending on when you call (weekend, off-peak, peak). Calling these from a mobile is more expensive. These are NOT mobile numbers. They are sometimes referred to as 'follow-me' numbers in that they can be diverted to your home/office/mobile by calling the provider or through a Web interface.

Many people think these are mobile numbers but you will get a shock when you see your phone bill as calling 070xx numbers will not come out of your inclusive minutes.

Mobile numbers are 077x and 079x.

Be very careful of any 070xx numbers as these are usually scams. The worst you could ever get charged is £1.50 per minute for 090x premium rate numbers.

Oops! Forgot about 078xx numbers. Yes, they're proper mobile numbers as well.

I have heard of scams like that where more than £1.50 a min is taken on the radio, papers etc. Must be possible then. Does anyone else get plagued by people from 3 trying to get you to change networks? at one point I was getting two calls a day from them.
