Right, nice question
Generally speaking java is *not* platform specific, so in the case of java on mobiles (Java 2 Mobile Edition) one J2ME app should work on any J2ME platform implementation... Though the implementations aren't quite up to scratch and so generally you have to find an app for your specific phone, or ocassionally that phone company's J2ME implementation.
If your looking for something specific maybe the best place to look is google?
I'm not convinced that utilising the IR would be all that simple, it will depend on the sony-ericcson java platform, and what they have made available to the developer via the API.
Hope that helps!
Done the rounds myself many times (usually after getting a new phone), and have never found anything usful to tbh.
Do you guys know any java? If theres something your after and can't find, why not give a go to trying to make it yourself
http://www.microjava.com/ gives a good explanation to J2ME, and should be a helpful starting point to anyone who wishes to construct their own apps!
You might want to try Esato. If there's something out there for a Sony Ericsson phone then they'll be the first to know.
Have to admit it's quite hard to find Java apps for Mobiles (without paying). But I currently have just got an awesome App for my K700i (if your a guitarist..) Which allows you to type in a chord and it will display on screen the chord diagram and many variations!!.. It's awesome for those strange chords which are really hard to remember.!
I have quite a few java games, and a few other apps on my computer, if you want the above app let me know, (for email - click Sig..).
Also I have searched many a times for an APP to control your TV through your MObiles Infa-Red port, with the java platform, but had no luck. To be honest after alot of reading I found that java doesn't generally have the capabilities to control the Infa-Red port, and if it did/does, the range isn't large enough to be practical...
This may have changed now, but it's information I gathered from searching the Web.
Hope this helps..

Java should be able to control the IR of such a device, it's just a question of whether they allow the API to interface with the device; as for the range your probably right the IR is generally enivsaged for data transfer only and so a maximum range of 1m is generally what they say to expect, and I know for certain my arms are that long
It is possible to control a TVs IR port, i've heard of apps that do it, just don't know where to find them
There are plenty for PDA's, but i have not seen one for a non-smart phone. Every forum i have read says the same as the above - its the wrong type of IR port. It can be used but only close up to the TV.
Would be great though. Just imagine the fun you could have in Dixons; "Oh my god, all the TV's have somehow tuned into the adult channels!!!".
