Sony to provide full length films on your mobile

Beginning today, some of Hollywood's biggest names will be strutting their stuff on the small screen thanks to the "Movies on Memory Cards" initiative from Sony Pictures Digital. Several films, including Hitch, Ghostbusters, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and Stuart Little are now available on memory cards to view on mobile phones.

Check out the Press Release on HEXUS.gaming for more info.

Judging by the article, they'll be distributed on DV RS-MMC cards and will be encoded using H.263 MPEG4.

DV RS-MMC cards go for quite a premium, which is probably why the price is so high. Still, why bother when you can already buy and rip the original DVD to play it on any Nokia smartphone for the same price?

You can also play them on the SE k750 and w800, not that i would actually sit through a whole movie on a phone.

I'd have to be out of options to do so on a PSP let alone a smaller screen

No one with an ounce of intelligence. There may be a few sales to begin with, mainly down to curiosity. But even the biggest noobs would be stupid enough to spend £20 on this.

The thing is, even the most capable phones are no where near good enough to support these things properly yet. For instance, the K750i - i have ripped a DVD to memory card and watching a full length DVD would be a real chore. Plus you cant pause it and start again and the quality is still no where near as good as it could be. No chapters either. If they were good enough, there would be applications all of the net which people were already using to rip the £12 DVD's to the memory cards they already have. Like the video iPod and PSP ones. But that's not the case. There are a couple of apps around, but they are very lame and complicated. Nero Recode does it, probably the best, but again it's a bit of a nightmare multi-step process with not particually great results. And all because it's just not worth it yet.

If you were watching a film on your phone while you were sat on the bus, would you need an entertainment licence because of viewing it in public?

Would you need to visit the opticians for a pair of glasses after watching a two hour film on a 1" screen too?

I bet some Noddy will complain cos they look pants on a 3310

Mind you though to watch a whole movie right through, none stop, you`d prolly need a car battery strapped to your back.
