I'm giving my old p900 to the missus. She's currently on virgin; phone was bought on contract with TMobile. Question is, do I need to unlock it and if so, what's the cheapest option?

Virgin piggybacks on the TMobile network so you shouldn't need to unlock it.
I can confirm this works. I bought a member of my family a virgin mobile and transfered her t-mobile sim to the new phone, and vice versa. Both work correctly.
I hope that helps,

If not, T-Mobile should unlock the phone for around £20.
