As far as I know, you need a special hardware box (£200+) to flash Nokia phones.

I'm afriad you'll have to take it to a Nokia service centre and cough up the dough.

Not entirely true.... I recently flashed my Nokia N80 firmware from my computer. Just do a google search. Might not be as easy for the 6230 though. Getting hold of the firmware files would be the hardest thing.

I remember carphone warehouse used to do firmware upgrades for free. Not sure if that's the case now. You could always go check there.

The latests nokia phones (such as the N80) can be flashed over USB using a simple cable, but the older ones can't and you have to use a special cable that connects with the connector under the battery. It is this cable, along with the modded battery that nokia recommends for flashing old phones, and charges about £200 for.

The 6230 is a few years old now, so it probably does not support USB flashing (I don't actualy know). You will probably be able to get a sutable cable from ebay or the like for less than £200, but probably more than the £15 the phone shop is charging.

chrestomanci is right - you need the special cable that goes underneath the battery.

I looked into this a few months ago when my firmware corrupted...somehow it magically fixed itself after a few months of being switched off though so I never got round to actually getting a cable, but if you google enough you will find a few websites stocking them. They were around 30-40quid if i remember correctly, so unless you want a few doing try going to your local phone dealer
