    N80 or K800i?

Well, its got to that point in the year again where my mobile phone contract is up for renewal. Now with BT being unable to run a call centre (and as such customer service is shocking) and the crap coverage I have been getting - I'm off to another network.

Vodafone have offered me 125 mins and unlimited texts/mms (for life) for £25/month - and will also throw in the k800i for free My question is this - is it worth paying to upgrade to a n80? It looks nice (and I have had the k700i and k750i as my last two phones) but doesnt seem to do anything more than the k800i?

    Thoughts/opinions/anything better?

    Cheers,

    Dave

i was in the same situation as you and went with the k800i. mainly because the extra features in the N80 i would never use, and the camera in the k800 is better.

i also heard the the N80 software is a bit ropey, and you cant fault that of the SE phones.

How does Nokia deal with software updates these days?

At least with SE you can download and update the software yourself if needed

Yeah there have been some problems with the symbian OS on the N80 - but these have largely been solved now with the latest updates (apparently), and its now stable enough to be used

Don't know what you mean with the SE phones - I guess its a love or hate thing but i can't stand the interface they have..I really like symbian for smartphones, and for a more phone-like device the 6 series OS works nicely

The biggest problem with the N80 (and the reason why I might go for a 6233 instead) is it's battery life - 1-2 days of general use, and your talking just a few hours if you use the wifi...

SE are notorious for using crap joysticks and a stupid charging system.

my joystick broke after about 6 months, that was a k750i and my t630 was unusable, as the joystick and half the keys broke. Also annoying when you go to someone elses house with an SE phone and you cant use their charger, as SE aren't universal, like Nokia. On the other hand, series 60 phones are painfully slow compared to others. My n70 takes almost a minute just to boot up. I can type in numbers faster than it can display them on the screen. i had the option to go for an n70 or w800i and chose the n70, just for a change.

I wouldn't call it a stupid charging system. SE have just changed the connector on the bottom of the phone in the newer phones to the Fast Port connected, presumably to allow the high speed USB connection. So there are two types of SE charger connectors, one for the older phones (which has been the same for a long time, before the Sony bit) and then the one for the newer phones

both of which use metal contact pins less than 2mm in length, therefore, my charger would regulary fall out if it wasn't lying flat, and my girlfriends charges sporadically, as the connection is now loose that it makes bad contact.

Well, after posting last nite & 45 mins of searching for the right drivers (not in the drivers folder with everything from the k300i to w950) I finally got everything installed.

I also managed to get the remote control function working on the laptop (over bluetooth), something that I failed miserably at with the k700i & k750i I had before The only thing I'm regretting is not getting the bluetooth module for my laptop, as it could come in handy, and I'm liable to break the dongle I've got protruding from the side of my laptop atm lol.

Harry - Wifi is not something that really bothers me - the internet on my phone is cheap enuff, or if there is a wifi hotspot, then I can use my laptop. I compared both of the phones in store, and I felt the n80 was too bulky (and if I understood the salesman correctly, has just been discontinued).

Now all I need to do, is find a Memory Stick Micro (what was the point in another format?!?!) and I'll be away

    Dave

dave, I got a 256 (cant find any larger than that in stock, even on the sony site) for my g/f's new k800i and it was £13 from amazon.

She got the phone yesterday on 3 (£22.50 for the first 3 months on the £45 contract to get the phone then she can drop the tarriff to £25) and I am impressed, I might consider a change from my D600 soon.

The camera is very nice, the flash is fantastic.

cheers, I doubt I'll need any bigger than that, as I've got my iPod for music - useful for photos and the like) as the camera is very good
