I'm still hearing people complain about the sluggish menu and navigation of the phone.

The menu and stuff seems quick enough for me. But then I always close all applications that I am not using.
Maybe people are leaving the applications open slowing down everything else ? It might also just be personal expectations of speed.
Having had 3 Windows Mobile phones in succession, and not used any of them as much as I had hoped to because of problems with speed, syncing, etc etc... I think I have a realistic idea of how slow and fast it will be, it's just whether it'll get on my nerves or not...
Do Nokia have a good track record of fixing speed and bugs in firmware releases? I suppose it is still relatively early days for the N95...

If you have not got a generic version of the N95 (i.e. network branded) just change the product code with a program called NSS to a generic one, try the nokia updater again and bobs your unkle :)
But will it remove all the T-Mobile specific settings on the phone now?
I dont want redo all the settings just to get A-GPS (which I dont even need at the moment as its mainly just to play around with).
Nope. Backup all settings to memcard (you will be remined/asked when you are about to install the new FW). Then after upgrading, re-install the backup. You will then have the very latest no branded firmware, with all your T-Mobile settings, contacts, everything. Even the apps you installed with be back and working! :)
Just remember to either backup after product code change, flash then restore backup and finally revert product code. OR backup, change product code, flash, revert product code and restore backup.
restoring backups for the wrong product has messed up some peoples settings.
I ended up with an American generic one judging by my product code, trying to decide whether to NSS + flash or not.

Autopilot you legend! NSS works great, cheers.
Just a quick update. The firmware before I had was version 10.somethingsomething. There is a general speed improvement, menus load quicker and such. I wonder if it will fix the bug of my phone randomly restarting itself too... it has unbranded orange from the phone which is great, because it was just bloatware basically and annoying (like everytime you took a picture they would ask if you wanted to blog it and such).
I've also noticed that the screen turns itself off sooner (after 5 seconds), before it was maybe 15 seconds until it turned itself off, so maybe other things have been modified to help save battery life too.
One other thing others (and me) have noticed...
theres sometimes what seems like random "lag" when using the keys/typing txt messages... at first i just put it down to lag/me not pressing the button right, but its definately something changed with the v12 firmware... its no biggie for me, but might be something that big texters think twice before upgrading
I noticed that in the old firmware but not so much in the new firmware?
I haven't noticed that so badly with the new firmware either. Although to be honest I haven't noticed much change with the new firmware at all. Still can't get a fix from the GPS whatever I do (it worked once, in my back garden, but never again. As I know where my back garden is, and where I am when I'm there, this isn't a lot of use to me :(), but as I don't use it, I'm not missing it - it's just a bit annoying when it comes to people saying "ooh it's got GPS eh? Let's see..." ;)
Ive just been using my N95 for a while now.
- GPS takes a little while to lock on, but seems to work alright once its got its bearings.
- With my Dell laptop and Bluetooth to connect to the phone and to give me broadband internet, it seems to be a bit flaky at times - mainly when the phone loses network. I think this has got to do more with the Dell BT solution. But it seems to be settling down now. Im currently on a train and the N95 seems to reconnect its HSDPA connection as required after getting knocked off the network due to tunnels or whatever.
- Battery life is pretty bad compared to other phones, but with a device such a huge screen as well as so much other stuff shoved in, its OK. It lasts me for a day and I charge my phones at night anyway.
- The camera is good in normal light, woefully inadequate in lowlight. It definitely is not a replacement for any sort of camera - but its good enough for a night out when you dont want to carry too many things around.
Im going to wait for TMobile to get the new firmware out before I upgrade. Either that or wait until most people report that there are no issues with it. I dont like lag between pressing the buttong and having it on screen.
I've got one, and i love it. best phone i have ever had, although the GPS is a bit crap as the ariel is at the bottom of the phone. and the sat nav costs a fortune to use
Mainly because I don't really use it or care about it - if I was more bothered about it I might have done that by now.
However it seems that maybe I just wasn't giving it enough time (I can be an impatient bugger) because it now seems to be working perfectly well. I must have looked a bit of an idiot walking to work this morning but I wanted to try it out again and it followed me along the road and round corners perfectly, pretty much to within a couple of yards. I just need to give it more than about 20 seconds before giving up in disgust I suppose. :)
You most definitely cannot text on this phone using one hand only ... Tried it a few times today unsuccessfully. Maybe with extensive practice I might be able to.
