    New phone on its way

Just got a text from O2 telling my the P990i was in stock and available for upgrade. It's now on it's way

Should be here middle of next week. Just a shame data costs are so high with O2 at the moment, especially compaired to the T-Mobile data cards.

Anyway, looking forward to replacing my K750.

Nice Funkstar I have always been tempted but the P series, but ended up with WM5 device on T-Mobile (O2 is my fav network, but T-Mobile's Web'n'Walk plan is just too good).

What app's are you planning to run on it? Let us know how you get on

I got a Vario, but the Vario II and others are available now. I love it, especially for TomTom.

Apart from heavy web browsing and email when i am working, you can use loads of apps that pull data of the net (TomTom trafic updates, RSS, messaging, etc, etc) without fear of a large data bill.

I'll let you know in a couple of weeks how it turns out.

I'm expecting it to be a bit more reliable than the review units that were floating about a couple of months ago, after all, they have had a while to get a couple of software revisions out the door. I think thats why O2 have taken so long to get the phone in. Hopefully it won't be filled with all the O2 rubbish the K750 was.

Funny we are one of the networks that put the least ammount of crud on the phones compared to others.

I guess it depends on what phone it is and when you buy it too. For example O2 practically crippled the XDA Mini s, but the T-Mobile Vario (both HTC Wizards) was pretty much fine (apart from the inherent Windows Mobile bugs). Many of the problems with the early K750i's were attributed to O2's version of the firmware. But I'm not singling out O2, i think Vodaphone are probably the worst for their intrusive branding and useless extras. The ability to flash the Firmware for a generic one is quite high on my list when choosing a new phone.

A huge bonus of O2 is that they don't lock their contract phones or have external branding on them. I hate the way Orange and Vodaphone insist on printing their logos on everything.

OK, first impressions. I like it.

It's the first smartphone i've had, so thing are a little different than i'm used to. Took a half hour of playing around and swearing to figure out that certain options and programs only appear when you open the flip, like the control panel for example. Once i worked out that i was able to turn on Bluetooth and start transfering my contacts from my K750/W800. Only problem with this was that the K750 kept producing corrupt vcf files. Turns out 5th name in my list was causing problems (no idea why). Transfered the rest individualy and dumped some un-needed numbers too. It's strange the way the P990 treats everything, including BT uploads, as messages rather than just file transfers.

I also find it odd the way messaging is like a seperate app, rather than just a function of the phone. But i guess i'll get used to that farely easily.

The screen on this is amazing. There is no way to compair it to a regular phone. very bright and very clear.

Predicting text is far more advanced than the K750 too. It remembers what words you have typed before and in what order. For example, if i type "Bilbo Baggins" once, the next time i type "Bilbo" it will offer to add "Baggins" in automatically. It also re-orders the alternative word list to reflect what you type most. I used to think the K750 did this as well, but i didn't notice it nearly as quickly as the P990.

Although the camera is still 2mp, it is much much clearer than the K750. Using is it also more like a proper camera than before.

The music player is pretty cool too. It shows cover art embeded in the MP3s, the details are also shown on the default phone screen when the media player is minimised.

Other than being a little fiddly at times, i don't have any complaints. Yet it is large, but that hasn't started to piss me off quite yet, although it might in time

Yup, similar system on the k800i - I can send whole messages pressing 3 buttons if I'm lucky

i was getting a little frustrated at it earlier, adding new words isn't as easy as before, especially when there is a correct work for what you typed. I hope the new smarts will be more useful once i've send a few hundred messages etc
