    Windows being funny...

No surprise comes when XP decides to do funny things. However, its last attempt at humour comes as more of an annoyance than anything.

The problem comes in the form that, whenever I browse the folders that contain video media files through windows explorer, WE hands me a nice little error and then proceeds to tell me that it's shutting down. DrWatson being the sheep that he is, swiftly follows suite. As you can probably tell, I love the fact that it is doing this...

To my knowledge, as the sole user of this computer, I have not installed anything new or different from what I usually have on it. Last format was in October or something.

Not found anything on Google so I thought I'd enquire in here. If anyone can prevent me from reinstalling windows again then I would be very greatful.

(<<---- PC Specs are on the little thing to the left if they are of any relevance)

(If this is in the wrong forum then please move / remove!)

Turn off thumbnail view on the folder. I bet that fixes it, mine did it for a while, turned out to be a bad build of xvid i had installed, causing errors when it was generating the thumbnail

This might be caused by windows trying to preview a video file using the wrong codec. Try this choose folder options for that window, choosing the General tab, and selecting “Use Windows classis folders”. This will remove the preview pane in the window, thus having Windows not attempt to preview the file. If it does not crash then that may be the problem.

Cheers for that - sorted it out a treat for the moment! I wouldn't mind fixing it so the nice little shortcuts on the left are still there :S

What codecs do you use then btw? I've just uninstalled my Xvid, Divx and 3ivx to be sure!

Another thing that happens is WMP crashes whenever I try to open these video files. No biggie though as I usually use VLC

That would be a codec issue then. Turning off video thumbnails would fix it (just make sure you apply it to all folders). Otherwise reinstalling all the codecs should overwrite any incorrect/corrupted files

Cheers for all the help guys - installed the latest build of ffdshow which seems to have sorted things out for now, even WMP no longer crashes!!!

Don't think I would have figured it out on my own, as simple as it was to resolve!
