    Vista overpriced Pertition to Govn

Came across this on the inquirer http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37788

"This pertiton demands that Blair "bring pressure on Microsoft for the huge difference in prices between the UK and the US".

The petiton claims that, in the UK, a "full copy of Vista Ultimate would cost you £350, in the US it would cost you £195. The US version of Vista is exactly the same as the UK version. There is no difference".

Dont suppose Blair will even if he bpothers will have any influence on anyone across the pond but ive signed.

Funny how people only complain now that there is a shiny new version of Windows out, nobody seems to have batted an eyelid about the past n versions of Windows.

This isn't a new thing, and it's not exclusive to operating systems. Things are cheaper in the US, it's just the way it is. If it bothers you that much move to the US.

When I've got more time (next year once house is sorted etc) I think Linux here I come.

That said, I would probably still end up buying Vista when I build my next PC, simply for DX10 support.

Sadly it is attitude that has lead to stuff being overpriced like this!! The price should be no more than 20-30% more than the US really due to VAT and any other duties.

However if people keep on saying it is Ok to add another 30-40% on top of this and that "it is the way around these parts and stop complaining" then companies will charge what they want!!

If people do not put up with such prices then the culture of overcharging would not be so prevalent!!

If companies can get away with charging whatever they want then they will and who would blame them!!??

    Good on them!

"They're ripping us off" is hardly a major political reason, this person doesn't know how to speak in their language.

For something like this to work they need to say 'the current Vista price scheme is putting UK business at an unfair distadvantage'

Which clearly it isn't, given that the majority of UK business won't be upgrading for some time yet. Also the majority of businesses will not be buying retail copies of Vista. As has been pointed out elsewhere the OEM prices are approximately the same across the board, and volume licenses should be even less.

    So don't buy it?

Seriously - if you think it's worth the price you buy it, if you don't (and enough people follow suit) the product will fail. This applies to any retailed product.

Honestly -in what way is it the government's business how much someone charges for something, unless it's paid for by the state?

On a slightly different note how much difference do you think it will make? The ID card and road charging scheme petitions closed in the past day or so with responses along the lines of "we see your viewpoint, but it's wrong"

Perhaps I should start a petition about the price difference for a pair of Levi 501s between the US and EU? Why would that be any different?

I signed it, something I do agree with.

Though looking at OEM prices they seem within reason compared to the US costs of them, yet Retail is just so different price wise. Just don't understand why its fine to rip off Consumers of the UK, but system builders get the same treatment as the US.

I would assume the difference in price is due to the fact that a) they have different currency which causes the worth/value of money to be different and b) income and average wages are different even when converted to sterling pounds.

Can people please be aware that this is EU-wide? It's NOT exclusive to the UK.

How about excersize some self restraint and just dont buy it
This I want XYZ under these terms so I have a right to XYZ attitude under these terms thats taken over this country just shows how shallow this country has become.
This is nothing to do with government and is not their problem. Just like house prices.

If you want it buy it if you disagree with the prices dont. Most folks out there dont care they are getting theirs free with their shiny new machines. Its only Microsoft getting the money back they have paid to the EU in fines. Everybody winges about government interference now they want the government to step in. To do what it has nothing to do with them. My brand of beans went up a penny last week so I had better lobby my MP.
