    Managing Domain Names

At the minute a colleague has some domain names hosted by some dodgy, expensive company.

Who's best to transfer them to giving him full control over A records/MX etc...

I was going to recommend UKReg as all mine are there, however, they seem limited to NS only...

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Im trying to get him in a position where he/I/anyone has full control over his domains, rather than having to email 'abc company' to change settings.

There was a company I used back in 2000 that allowed me to edit the zone file by hand when I was working for ILDNetworks, but it was so long ago I don't even remember the name of the company, 'twas Grande something or another.

I'm sorry that isn't much help but it does demonstrate that there are some good companies out there without the automagic domain wizardry restrictions.

I used 123reg for my domain name hosting. They are cheap and you have pretty much full control over all the record types including sub domains as well.

I use 123reg as well and have had no problems, not sure if they offer all the features that you want though.

I`ve had no problems setting the MX records to point elsewhere with 123 reg.

The control panel offers a pretty comprensive set of options.

We use 123-reg as we get a really comprehensive panel of options, you can pretty much change everything without any other intervention.

We've got about 200 domain names hosted with them

can change A/MX and others no probs, even offers easy peasy web forwarding too

123-Reg are pretty good if all goes well, and fine for registration. Their control panel is fairly comprehensive.

But if things don't work well automatically and you require customer service ... well, let's just say my experience was that they're dire.

It took nearly a week to get them to acknowledge that a registration request had failed, so they sent out a template and asked for the information manually. A week later, and four ignored emails, and FINALLY they refunded the registration fee and said "put it through again" ... which took about 10 minutes to appear as registered .... and even that after I issued a vague threat.

So ... auto works, time = 10 minutes.

Auto fails, time = two weeks and STILL doesn't get the domain.

You shouldn't have to send an email pointing out that their customer service is atrocious and insisting on either the domain being registered or a refund issued within 48 hours, before they wake up.

Would I use them again? Yes, reluctantly. They're cheap and the control panel is effective. But I'm praying I never need customer service again.

I use 123-Reg for .uk domains and namecheap for all others. Both are well priced and give you a lot of control.

123- reg, but as saracen said if things go wrong it takes an awful long time for it to be resolved. I believe this is to encourage you use the 50p a minute phone line. Overall they are not too bad.

Another recommendation for 123reg - I've never had a problem personally. Although after the recent negative press I'd advise to not use Go-Daddy

Looks like im a 123reg convert, switched said domains to them and just ordered a few more for someone else via them.

Can't be fussed to switch mine, theyre still with UKReg.
