AVI Program With Surround Sound Encoding....

Yep, thats pretty much what I'm after!

Using AVS Media Tools at the moment to encode my dvd's onto my HDD's so I can watch them easily convieniently etc thru MCE. Problem being I can only encode them with stereo sound and was really after surround.

I'm encoding at quite a high bit rate, movies are coming out at around 2 GB after compression so I wouldn't be overly fussed if the audio wasn't compressed.

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

there are literally thousands of tools to compress DVD to other formats. most of them should allow you to keep the original sound stream

Your movie should come with a DTS or AC3 track, just keep that track and put in your AVI file.

LPCM on DVD is only stereo, so there is no way you get uncompressed surround sound audio stream from a dvd unless you decode it.

5.1 ac3 is usually 448kbps or 384kbps. if those fit, then use them.
