Difference between oem and retail os.

Ok first I'd start by saying hello, and that I'm not the best at the software side of building a pc I'm more of a hardware person, so I'm close to buying a new operating system for my new build but I don't know whether to choose OEM or the full retail of xp as I don't have the need for vista yet. So my first choice was to get xp pro OEM which is sub £100, but after reading on a different forum saying that you cant change the hardware on OEM it got me a bit worried as I'll probably upgrade the CPU and motherboard in the first 12 months so would it be wise to step down to xp home retail which is a stretch for me at £170ish which should allow me to change hardware if when needed??

Just buy OEM the main differnece is they dnt provide support for OEM as its meant to be sold with a system, you can change your hardware as much as you like, but you might have to ring up microsoft to activate after a big upgrade as its differnet hardware from before so the online registaration can be a pain.

    there are two differences:

OEM comes with no technical support

OEM is only licensed for one "computer" (motherboard), and cannot be transferred to another "computer (motherboard) other than in the event of a DIRECT replacement for hardware failure. i.e. you can't upgrade your motherboard, legally, with an OEM OS

In other words ring MS and say your motherboard just blew up and they'll let you reactivate it.

While asking if your motherboard blew up why have you also conveniently changed processor, memory and PSU at the same time?

So I should be OK if I get xp pro OEM, as I'll only be upgrading the motherboard and cpu most likely, could just say the mobo blew and took the cpu as well, as I've never had to reactivate changing ram

    actual reactivation isn't a problem

but doing it for unlicensed reasons (i.e. upgrading the motherboard) is in violation of the license, making you no better than someone who pirated the software

You'll make a good old lady one day. What happens if you can't buy that MB any more? Been there myself and MS were fine about it..
You preach like your work for MS' licencing department - the reality is quite different from your (jaded) POV in my experience as MS are only too glad to help people who actually paid _something_ for their OS.

Yep, and that's a valid reason and you wouldn't be fraudulently obtaining something. But there's a difference between genuinely needing to change type of motherboard and saying you needed to when you didn't.

I think directhex's point is why bother agreeing to a license if you're not actually agreeing with it.

...and mine is that if you ring MS and they say 'ok' then you've complied with MS' wishes (it is, after all, their blinking licence in the first place). You don't need to lie to them they're _human beings_ after all and rather more helpful than some make out. At least acknowledge that neither your or I can make the decision..

Oh absolutely - I think we're agreeing here - you should tell MS the situation as it really is, not lie and say you needed to replace a motherboard when you didn't. Given that you tell them the truth, they may well still turn around and say that's no problem

Ok so I think Ill go with xp home oem as its cheaper and I don't need the xp pro stuff. Now my next question is if I install xp home on my new machine with the new licence can I use the same disk to reinstall xp home on my current machine as its got an oem xp home and its own licence just never got a disk from Packard bell??
