Linux for my HTPC ? Easy enough ??

    Evening,

My HTPC is on schedule to go live for next weekend, but am thinking about other OS's instead of XP, like maybe Linux.

Knowing that I know absolutely nowt about Linux or Unix, and being very comfy with the Windows interface, is any version of Linux going to easily lend itself to HTPC use ?

I'll need only very basic programmes installed : MP3, Photo & DVD/HD movie players, and good old Firefox (which I know runs nicely in Linux).

Ubuntu maybe ? How easy is it for a beginner to install & configure and how easy to operate ?
    Cheers, David

you can chose any distro that has support for multi media packages like mythtv for example that is popular.

The best choices are to pick main stream distros like Fedora, ubuntu, Suse, etc. That way the packages are maintained and kept up to date to a reasonable level.

If you are happy with windows and comfy with the interface stick with what you know and are happy, don't change unless you have a reason (for example cost of OS)

As you are aware I'm sure aware support for device's in linux has come on in leaps and bounds, but that doesn't mean they are always straight forward to configure.

If you want to get it working and start using, you will probably benifit from using the OS/applications you're most comfortable with, if you have unlimited time to get this working, then its an excellent learining tool.

    Just food for thought.
    It is Inevitable.....
