Vista for students ?

Is there an academic/student version of Win Vista available in the UK ?

I have seen it on US sites (Win Vista Home Premium upgrade academic license) for about $70.

Im not a computer science student or anything related to those departments. So I doubt I would qualify.

Get someone to give you a copy of it from there and use the serial it gives them Hell ive got 3 serials for windows 2003 which would set ya back 2000 quid retail or so lol

I picked up a cheap Acedemic edition from wizardprice.com and I am not even a student

If you check this thread you will see that doing a trick with the upgrade version, gives you a full (non-OEM) licence as well. At 50quid for Home Premium, that can't be bad

So, basically, you're saying coerce a CS student into breaking the license under which they're provided with the product key?

That particular vista version seems to have been discontinued on their site. If you could point to another link it would be great.

i didnt say it was exactly legal , anyway the microsoft person running the msdn gave me the extra key.. i think he got confused and thought i was upgrading to 2003 *shrugs* so he gave me 2 keys.

Technically the other key is a 120 trial (MCSE book)

something about you can only activate it once and with retail its unlimited.

The answer is no though, there is not UK academic upgrade edition (yet) for students in the UK. There might be ones for educational establishments but I don't think there are any for students...the MSDN AA is the only place I know of where you can get it, its worth asking your university even if you are not a computing student, as its down to the university who gets access to what

Has anyone tired to upgrade XP with a retail version of Vista? surely one of the versions must do it.

The answer is no though, there is not UK academic upgrade edition (yet) for students in the UK.

There is, wizardprice have them, I received mine from them and installed it a few days ago. They say on their website that its discontinued....but had 109 in stock yesterday and ~150 now today. Perhaps they sent mine out early? I pre-ordered it back in January and have had a number of courtesy email from them apologising for the delay....perhaps someone jumped the gun?

It clearly states on the (very odd) box that its an Academic Edition (Upgrade)...and its most certainly a UK edition.

That doesn't appear to suggest that it's OEM - ie, can activate it again if I buy a new computer and install XP on it first?

No, its an upgrade.

That means if you upgrade from OEM, it becomes OEM. If you upgrade from retail, it becomes retail.

There is a Microsoft documented loophole though that means you can install the upgrade as a clean install without a product key (i.e. a 30 day eval) and then upgrade it to a full retail licence.
