    xp Vs Vista

    Hi all

I am about to get a new pc should i stay with xp or go for the new vista operating system. I use my machine generally and not for any real purpose, my number one priority is security.

I am sure this has been talked about before sorry about this.

    Thanx

    Tan

It's a personal choice to be honest, they are about the same price. I would tend to side with just sticking to XP, but if you are pretty sure that you will eventually go down the vista pathway you may as well do so now than fork out the expense of buying both.

Vista will be slower though, and it's still waiting on it's first service pack.

Check that none of the software you use has compatability issues with it as well.

If security is your priority then Vista has the potential to be more secure, and MS are not going to waste too much money on winxp or win2k in the future when they want everyone to buy/use Vista, and when you think about it why would MS spend billions and bring out an OS that is worse than winxp.

BTW don't expect Vista to be "crash proof", but IMO it is the best OS, from MS so far, to recover from a crash.

il use xp untill it has no updates left, all i see in vista is an os which is tarted up, and has a few more features, that i dont want, as everything i do on my pc is a program on it (games, msn, music) so the last thing i want to do is play with control panel,

If you're buying a new PC it seems rather backward to suggest XP now. Just about everything is vista compatible now and if not there are alternatives.

If you're very concerned about security you can get the business/ultimate edition and take advantage of full drive encryption and so on.

Surely you are arguing against upgrading which is different from starting from new.

And a thought that MS was already concerned people might have, hence their specific addressing of that point and actual extension of the support life for XP.

You should read more of kalniels posts he is definitly not gullible. Tanman much as I am no great fan of Vista take kalniels advice and go with Vista it is the future(for now) so there is no point in going backwards.

XP, vista is a pile of horse ****.

I'll get Vista when Crysis is out, hopefully things actually work then, and Nvidia have some decent drivers.

LOL at people who think MS will abandon XP. They supported ME/2000 until only a few years ago, probly longer.

If I was buying an operating system now, XP wouldnt even be in the equation.

If you want a microsoft based operating system, then surely theres no other logical choice than Vista? Why buy old software when the new one if a very similar price...

Most of the updates were/are for businesses surely and some of them caused problems................I've never had an update since SP2, so what am I missing esp as I don't use IE or outlook express.

as said above xp will not be abandone for years to some, there are still businesses and what not using 2000.

im not saying that i am against upgrading, but i just think xp is a nice os to use and i know my way around it, and the last thing i want to do is upgrade to vista. which from what i have seen hhas no real improvements that i would use..

the best thing i have seen for it is the voice recognition.. which was good. but that 3d task switching really isnt gong to make me spend 150 quid on an os.

Unless you have the full retail version of Vista installed on your PC, please shut up.

    I keep seeing this exact same argument;

    Vista's **** don't buy it,
    Why do you own it?
    No I'm not buying it it's ****
Did you even use the Beta?
    No it's **** I'm not using it.
How do you know it;s **** if you haven't even used it?
It's Microsoft it must be ****.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but can you at least have something to base it on or at least back it up?

What exactly about Vista makes it so bad it's worth staying with XP and not having DX10, IPv6 and a myriad of newly supported stuff?

I bought Vista OEM purely because the price of the RAM I wanted dropped £70 and I had the money to waste. Seeing as i was building a new PC anyway I bit the bullet and I have to say I've been nothing but impressed.
