    Extracting laptop XP cd-key

    Hi

My flat mate's laptop hard-drive died at the weekend and no longer boots. We've managed to get all the valuable data off by sticking it in a usb caddie but have no idea how to get the XP key. I think I heard that the sticker on the laptop isn't the actual key...? If not can it be taken from the disk without booting XP from it? No sign of the original disk either as it was from ebay.

    Any suggestions? Cheers

Not heard that one before. Sometimes with large OEMs (HP, Dell, Toshiba, etc) they can have a different type of key (for want of a better word) than the OEM XP you'd buy in the shops, meaning that only the original disk or another from HP, for example, would work with that key.

Strangely, my the image I use for deployment here at work seems to work with any OEM key I've tried in it - Acer, Sony and most recently HP. :\
