RIGHT! UBUNTU & XP dual boot.from scratch guide...

right i currently have an okish windows build but im annoyed with windows and want my ubuntu back lol.
    so....
gonna format my windows drives and whack ubuntu on and then small xp for the odd game(Y) or app that i might need.
so as I've heard keeping xp can be a pain in the ass and fancy a fresh install apparently its recommended to do unbuntu first? then win?
a guide and exactly directions would be great as im gonna start installing ubuntu now and would like to be able to check back here and read what to do when it comes to win(Y)
    cheers

    0) Partion your hard drive with one partion for windows at the start of the disc, and the rest for Linux. It is so much easer if you don't let windows take the whole drive, and then have the linux installer shrink it's partion.

There is a partion editor on the windows install disc, or if you want a nice graphical one, you could give gparted a try (there is a bootable ISO you can download), or look on the ubuntu install disc.

windows will delete any boot loaders it finds during install, preventing you from booting any non-windows OSen

    restoring grub is non-trivial

this is why the recommendation is ALWAYS to start with windows

The reason for doing windows first, is that if you do it afterwards it will reset the boot block on your hard drive, so that you can't select linux when your system first boots.

If you do linux second, it will set-up a boot menu that gives you the choice between the two.

    keef247, lets look at this

    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.p...t=linux+ubuntu
    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.p...t=linux+ubuntu

These are all threads started by you on linux and ubuntu in a lot of which have advised you where to get info

    this one in particular
    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.p...t=linux+ubuntu

Where you've asked how to dual boot, and directhex's quote in that thread is as follows
ideally, you want windows installed first - the windows installer will eat any non-windows boot loaders it sees.

So for the record I'll advise you again.

1.) there are some good introduction books and just basic "welcome to ubuntu" docs on http://www.ubuntu.com
2.) there are some very guide guides and tutorials on https://wiki.ubuntu.com that explain thing like system setup including dual booting how tos
3.) the forums - http://www.ubuntuforums.org has a lot of answers to specific questions, a quick search of them may get you a specific answer.

These sources will answer pretty much all of the problems in the llinks of your questions, and give you alternative questions.

It looks like you've been dabbling with ubuntu for a while now but just don't read much or get very far with it.

I strongly suggest (again) you review these sources of info as reading some of the threads above (myself included) got a bit tired of spoon feeding you

If your this alien to information and learning - you're going to struggle with a new operating system, no matter what it is
