    *** Office "Genuine" Validation

I run OpenOffice and Thunderbird for my e-mail needs. I saw that MS had implemented their genuine advantage spyware for Office too, so I thought I'd give it a blast just for a laugh.

Anyway, it transpires that I am indeed running a genuine copy of Office!(?) Interestingly though, it couldn't find any updates for it....

I wonder if anyone has bothered to try the same with Windows Update when running Linux?

Edit: What's wrong with using a $ in MS? Now the title looks pants and I can't even modify it...

    because its stupidly childish?

So your running Office under wine? Or under windows? and its failing validation?

    Considered ringing them?

Another post from someone who evidently can't be bothered to read - at what point did I say actually say I was running MS Office or anything about failing validation?

I was actually poking a bit of harmless fun at Mr Gates newest "genuine" spyware, just in case the humour is too subtle for you.

As for stupidly childish, I don't believe I was breaking any forum rules by trying to post M $ instead of MS:

However you may want to read the part about insults yourself.

LOL Well I guess it's just its way of saying 'you don't have any non-genuine MS software'..

Even MS's own Windows 2000 doesn't bother checking for genuine installations during the WGA "validation" when downloading software from their site. It just skips straight to the page download page.

It's fair to say it's not the most intelligent programme in the world.

Windows 2000 doesn't have the nesecary hooks for WGA to validate on it anyway does it?

In fact, does it even work on plain XP or XP with SP1? i don't think it does.

I've no idea. Just suggesting that if MS couldn't get it working on 2000 there's little chance of a 'nix setup being accurate.

It would have helped if your post had been a bit clearer and made more sense..as I read it your point is that you are running a pirated copy of office over wine and WGA didn't pick it up.

    a) Thats only a guess as your post is so badly constructed
    b) What is the point of that post? Letting everyone know you can pirate stuff?
    c) Even if you were trying to be funny, its not..

Sorry to have a go but when you respond like that after a post like that...

I think what he's trying to do is one of the most pointless things ever

Let point linux services at microsoft updates and laugh at the inevitable responses.

He's running office update against Open Office and commenting that ooooh microsoft isn't clever enough to work it out and makes a mess of validating it,

the second suggestion is also as weak

run windows update against a linux based OS........

    <enable weak ms-sux-talk>

I mean WOW ***$$ suxor windowz update can't even work out a linux client....

    <disaable weak ms-sux-talk>

    Bottom line

1.) you can't expect this to work or even have a point to it
2.) point a debian box at a redhat update and watch it fail to get your kicks
3.) what does it matter if it works or not or the exact error message, your purposly trying to do something thats not meant to work
4.) you could have raised one of the more interesting point is that when XP had some many security updates windowsupdate.microsoft.com couldn't cope with all the traffic so they had to employ linux front end web caches to handle the traffic for microsoft updates
    It is Inevitable.....

I didn't think the purpose of the thread was from within wine, more with a native none-microsoft OS

    Erm...

This thread was actually meant to be for a laugh, however it appears that no one here appreciates my sense of humour.

I'd appreciate if one of the moderators could send this thread to the big thread graveyard in the sky as it is obviously serving no useful purpose.

Don't worry - I won't be posting again in the OS & applications board.
