I found the lack of top toolbar buttons an annoyance (file, view etc.)
Also, the constant presence of the confusing file tree structure down the left pane.
What's useful though is the search at the top and also the spam mail filter in outlook (or 'windows mail' as it's now called). I kinda wish I'd never gone to Vista - my TV tuner stick won't work with it.
I would also suggest turning off the stupid eye candy, it speeds it up. It's made my computer unbearably slow. I have it set as windows classic style. Up to you though. If you have a beast of a machine then it'd be fine.
If you want to set up an FTP folder, you right click in the my computer window and there's the option. Took me ages to find that!

had a quick google and it seems u are able to have motion desktops. How would i go about sorting that one out on premium?

You mean Vista Dream Scene.
You have to download the beta for it... it is ONLY beta right now.
Do a decent google for it as pretty much only a few Vista fan sites hosted the file off of Microsoft's servers and it;s not up on MS anymore.
Tbh, it't not worth the bother unless you have a relatively static image with a small amount of movement in it, such as Bill Gates' demo with a waterfall running in the background of his scene.
If you have to much movement it's immediately distracting and stomach churning.
Edit: I've just noticed it recently become available as a preview for Ultimate, dunno about Premium.
turn off the user account control, gets bloody annoying after about the third application you try to install!
UAC was good in theory. But it's when you have to click ok three times, that's a bit annoying. Like, to copy and replace a file:
- right click paste
- dialogue comes up, select copy and replace
- UAC warning, it's trying to access administrator priveledges, click ok
- windows administration thing, in order to complete this you must have admin access (I have an admin account anyway..)
:grump:
Not so bad on my speedy gonzalez computer, but on my girlfriend's, not sure why, her screen goes black for half a second before it comes up, and then after you click ok (no system slow down, just happens for that fixed amount of time).
I think one of my favourite features is the media centre, absolutely fantastic. Erm, integrated search. I don't use the glorified alt tab really at all, I have my taskbar for switching windows. I only use alt tab (and still the old alt tab) when I'm in full screen apps (games) to get onto the desktop (unless of course there's a better way to do that, windows key and m or something does something).
I think for me, Vista mainly improves ease of use. I plug stuff in, and it works automagically. Still installed vital system drivers seperately of course. But it's all working lovely at the minute, except one of my hard drives died, but that's getting posted back to scan tomorrow.
I've got one complaint, and it's that it doesn't have any robust cd burning tool yet. Can't imagine why. Downloaded the trial of nero to do something, and nero is basically an operating system in itself these days! Whatever happened to ez cd creator that came with my dvd drive all those years ago. However, it's got something for formatting cds, live format or something, so you can use a CD like a USB hard drive, drag files to and from at will, rather than burning in defined sessions. Too complicated for me though, just like to build my .iso and burn it!
i couldnt get nero's virtual drive to work in vista!i found it came up with an error when i used version 6 i think it was in vista so upgraded and couldnt find that feature atall!as if they just removed it and called it vista ready!unless i missed something...
mind you that was in rc2,and i now have rtm but just couldn't be bothered to mess about to see if it worked- i just found something else!
Not only that, but it's completely and utterly pointless. Firstly, if you have a large monitor at a high resolution, that means you need decent high res vids running in the background or it looks garbage. These aren't exactly in abundance though.
So, my solution was to download some High Def Windows Media Vids from their site and edit them to the scenes I want and remove the sounds.
Which looks lovely (Living Sea for example). Problem is, running Dreamscene with such a vid hammers your CPU (at least 50%) making the function a waste of time.
