    user32.dll has been moved

Earlier my girlfriend turned on her laptop, as she always does, and it comes up with an error message along the lines of "the file user32.dll has been moved..."

It was in German (she's German so she has German XP) so I don't know exactly what it said and I dismissed it as something random since she said it never happened before. However, another German friend has just asked me "hey do you know what a system dll is" because the same thing happened to her!

Any clues as to what it is, and why it should happen on the same day to two seperate people both using German XP?

It's got something to do with Realtek integrated audio drivers. My mate had the same thing happen on both his home-built desktop and his wife's Toshiba laptop today. MS have released a patch for it, read here and see if this applies to you:

Given how many motherboards use Realtek integrated audio I'd be very surprised if this isn't popping up on literally millions of machines worldwide. IMHO Microsoft should be pushing this out through automatic updates as a critical patch.

    Glad to have helped!

i don't know the details of what broke in the update, or what the fix involves, but i wouldn't be surprised if Realtek were doing something they shouldn't have been doing to come accross this issue.

If that is the case then there is no point in MS pushing out an update to everyone when only those with naughty Realtek drivers are having problems.

Not wanting to turn this thread into an MS-bashing free-for-all, but my mate's desktop machine has been running happily with the Realtek drivers installed from Asus, the mobo manufacturer, for a number of months now. Having said that, it's possible that the Realtek driver was doing something naughty and it didn't come to light until MS released an update to user32.dll that tripped the Realtek driver up.

My point was that since MS have acknowledged the problem with a KB issue and released a patch for it, and given that Windows Update and associated stuff can identify what hardware is in the machine, it wouldn't be too much work for them to have that patch come down through Automatic Updates to those affected by this. But yes, if it is Realtek's fault as such then they should be fixing their drivers as well.

EDIT: God, think I'll have splinters in my ass from sitting on the fence so much!
