Is this a massive vista con for more money?

To my disbelief I read an article on the web the other night claiming that Vista operating system can only ever be re loaded three times on one machine,

after which you need to purchase a new product code

is there any truth in this

I doubt it. More likely you just have to re activate it. It's just like the hardware change limitation in XP.

Think you need to get out a bit more mate

With XP OEM, with the same hardware, I think you can only reactivate 3 times online - when you used those 3 activations, you had to ring MS and they'll happily give you new numbers. I'd imagine Vista isn't significantly different, but I've not got an OEM license, so I can't confirm that.

If you dont change hardware then re-activation isnt required.

(Get lucky like me and use MSDN...for test purposes only you understand)

Not quite sure how that comment was intended but it perhaps doesn't come across that well. I'm assuming that you also intended to point out that Microsoft also document a registration work around on tech net for legitimate versions if you are that way inclined.

I wouldn't have though it was wise to advertise ways to by-pass activation on a public forum...

Still don't know what this has to do with the original question, "can you install vista more than 3 times?", to which the answer is yes.

your info is several years out of date

vista has the same activation limits as XP - i.e. after N number of internet-based activations, you'll start needing phone-based activations.

and OEM copies are only licensed for 1 motherboard

Not just limited top the mobo now.

    All major components (hdd/cpu/memory).

Some have had to reactivate after a RAM overclock

    licensed != activated

the license is only valid for 1 motherboard

you can reactivate as often as you like, and change any components you like, but not the motherboard
