    NOD32 Antivirus

I've been reading about various antivirus/firewall type programs on these forums.

Currently I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 and use ZoneAlarm Security Suite which includes AntiVirus, AntiSpyware and Firewall. It is a bit annoying though as I notice it eats up RAM and when scanning makes my computer annoyingly (though not debilitatingly slow).

I was wondering though is there a better combination of firewall, av, antispyware out there. NOD32 looks as though it'll do the job, but I'm not sure if it includes a firewall?

    Any and all suggestions appreciated.

I run NOD32, and would recommend it to most people.

NOD32 doesn't have a firewall in built, some use the old Sygate Personal Firewall (which is application aware), and NAT in their router. Personally, as I know what I install on my PC, I use windows firewall and a NAT router. Served me fine, I've no problems

Oh, and I run PeerGuardian, which stops most of the Spyware communicating, and tells you you've got a problem

^^ Agree with Davey boy and OiD, have NOD32 and cant fault it doesn't hog system resources and does what it says on the tin. I don't run software firewalls on the network as I have a Cisco Pix 515E hardware firewall which grasses up any skiddy, portscan or worm that farts in its general direction. (Windows XP firewall only blocks incoming crap and doesn't stop a rogue trojan opening a connection from inside the network). I do have the normal assortment of anti spyware gubbins installed though, peer guardian and spybot have always looked after me!

I don't bother with a software firewall. Just NOD32 and the hardware firewall in my router. If a software firewall was deemed necessary I'd still be using Sygate too, despite it's lack of development (damn those Symantec villains!)

I also use NOD32 and Sygate. Kaspersky/Steganos and others using the same engine are No. 1 for virus detection but NOD32 is a close second and I still have a subscription.

ZoneAlarm are supposed to have switched to Kaspersky for their AV scanner so a simple update to the current version may be all you need.

For more details on alternative AVs, check AV Comparatives for one of the most comprehensive tests available online.

Firewalls are much more of a personal choice (simplicity, flexibility, intrusiveness, etc) but selecting one that does well on blocking leaktests (i.e. not Sygate!) is the most important factor. FirewallLeaktester.com has a good summary of results and the Wilders' Other Firewalls forum is a good source for more information.

I've been using F-Secure and KIS on different computers. If RAM / resource usage is a concern then I would say KIS would the more ideal suite between the two. However, F-Secure is better value for money giving you 3 licences for as low as £35 (if you need them). But both are top suites (performance wise).

If you pop down to your local news agents then you can grab a copy of computer shopper which has a 6 month licence included on the disc for KIS if you want to try it.

In addition to what Paranoid2000 referenced, this site also shows how well various firewalls performs at leak teats.

By the way, Paranoid2000, are you the say person registered under that name on wilderssecurity?

NOD32, router firewall, Windows firewall switched off. Also use AdAware and Spybot, seem to pick up anything I collect (which is minimal due to judicious surfing).
    Cheers, David

Like many others I use NOD32 and my router firewall. I have used others in the past like Norton and Macafee but I have always noticed them eating into my RAM.

I feel NOD32 does its job well and can't fault it. The others after a while either slowed my sytem down or had sporadic error messages.

NOD32 works well on windows ultimate if your interested.
