    Exact Audio Copy

I'm trying to get this program working so that I can copy my CDs into mp3 format accurately. Trouble is the program can't see either of my optical drives. It's a daft question but I don't need a standalone CD drive do I. Both my drives are listed in my sig and are both DVD drives but play CDs

Have you tried the Nero ASPI drivers?

Try dropping this file in the EAC folder:
    http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/WNASPI32.DLL.html

Also have a look at the Tips & Spec page for EAC, there is a piece about ASPI drivers there

I use DBPoweramp - supports accurate rip too (although im not sure if it makes any real difference).
Cdex does the job nicely too. I just like the interface of DBPoweramp - and im going to use it once ive brought it

Up until now I've always used itunes but I'm not always convinced by the quality. I posted the queary and a LOT of people told me to start using EAC with LAME. Now i'm starting to wonder whether it was worth all the effort lol

That's because iTunes is rubbish, along with it's companion product iPod.

    You're better off with CDex/LAME.

I've always used FLAC (in foobar) but then again it uses one hell of a lot of space.
    With love and many thanks,

    It's all relative really.

I have my collection in FLAC and MP3. The archive in FLAC takes about 400gig i think (haven't checked it in a while) and that is for ~1025 albums, a lot of which are double or tripple disk sets. The MP3 copy is about 85MB.

I don't think that is a lot of space, not compaired to what it will take to archive off my DVDs as ISO rips

Another vote for CDex here - great freeware program that simply does the job without any unnecessary frills.

Oh, and IMHO, FLAC is the Apple Mac of audio file formats.

It's of a far superior quality, but most portable audio equipment doesn't play it, and a lot of people that use it spend far too much time wibbling on about how superior it is to MP3 rather than actually listening to their tracks :-P

(By my reckoning, OGG Vorbis is Linux )

I can see your point Mike, but i think of it completely differently.

I have my FLAC archive which my Squeezebox uses. I have pretty good ears (better than most of my friends and family) although i doubt i could really tell the difference between 320Kbit MP3 and a FLAC. However, having a lossless archive means i can re-encode to any lossy format without having to shuffle something in the region of 1300 disks again. I also don't have to put up with the generation loss that transcoding MP3 to Ogg, for instance, would create.

Lots of people go on about lossless formats for portable players, personally i don't see the point. You are on the move, probably with cheap ear buds, why do you need lossless?

Oh I know that Funkstar - it wasn't you I was taking the mickey out of, just some of the members of the live gig trading sites that seem to take a perverse pleasure in analysing FLAC files to make sure they've not been previously encoded in MP3 format.

My ears aren't good enough to differentiate between 256k and FLAC anyway

Ah, so what you are saying is FLAC users are often really anal fan boys? Just like Mac users

Not sure i would agree 100%. FLAC is native to my SB3, so it's the best choice for lossless for me. It also supports perfect gapless playback. Lossless is the future, you can't fight it And FLAC is probably the most widely supported lossless codec in terms of how many different devices support it.

That says something about their personality, not FLAC

Cdex is second best to EAC. If you rip a lot of gapless albums, EAC has better gap detection.
