    Try VNC

Or on of its 'enhanced' versions:
Tight VNC - I think optimised for slow connections.
Ultra VNC - Optimised for fast connections.

You install the server part on any pcs you wish to remotely control and the client part on any pcs that you use to connect to these remote clients.

I have Ultra VNC installed on my home machine running Vista but I would like to dial in to it using my XP machine at work.

My PC is connected via a router to the Internet, how would I get round the router so VNC would pick up the incomming connection?

You need to set port forwarding (NAT) settings. The standard vnc port is TCP 5900. So all you need to do is set your pc's ip, the inside and outside port as 5900 (or whatever port you have set vnc to use), and your external ip (or 0.0.0.0 if this is not a static address).

Portforward.com - see if your router's mentioned in that list - chances are it'll have a step-by-step guide for *VNC. If not, just look at another guide as it'll be very similar (just using the correct port number, as Vroomparrot mentioned (5900)).

Even if you have to rely on another model from the same manufacturer, it'll likely be a very similar process.

Just also found logmein.com whihc is mean meant to be very good and do everything that VNC can, I've checked with work and VMC won't work within the network so I'll have to use this for the time being. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Potentially the only problem with Logmein is that you can't transfer files using the free option - I have to upload them to my webspace and then download them at the other end.

TeamViewer works on the same principle I believe, so if Logmein doesn't work for whatever reason, you might want to give that a go.

I don't know if they've fixed it or not, but vista did have a limitation where one of it's security features stopped other PCs accessing it via VNC. There may be work arounds now, but I'm not sure. On top of that, I can't remember the name of the security feature that's the problem, but I think it basically mean that one of the processes it needs to access isn't run as the right user.

UltraVNC works fine for me on x86 without any workarounds or anything - I don't have the Windows Firewall on though, which may have been the issue?

Agreed. I've been using LogMeIn for over a year now and it's been incredibly useful more times that I care to remember. It depends whether you need to transfer files across really (I have a VPN for that), but for general Remote Desktop usage, it's a great little app.

If I need to transfer any of the files to my work PC I can always email them to myself

Loving logmein though, used it today to start a defrag and backup my files whilst at work.
