I'll be using my new system mainly for gaming and general surfing/music/film use.
Is there any real benefit from getting the 64bit versions of these OSs? Will there be more compatibility issues than the mainstream 32bit versions? Is more better?![]()

At the moment, there's no massive benefit to get 64bit, and there are more compatability issues compared to the 32bit versions.
But it depends how long you want to go without a change of software - 64bit is more future proof so when we need 4gb RAM or greater you'll be ok.
id go 64 bit imo its not alot of problem at all so why not?
You can use the same cd key for both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions, go with 32 bit for now and in 12 months reformat and borrow a friends 64 bit cd![]()
Im using 64 bit XP. Playing games has been relatively trouble free. Only some older titles had problems but anything in the past 2-3 years has been fine.
There are other issues such as USB freeview adapters. I can't use my Megasky 580 (unless anyone knows?)
XP64 is fast and definitely recommended. I'd like to try out VIsta but really wanted to try it first before forking out money for it.
There's an XP 64bit trial you can download from Microsoft somewhere.

Yeah, I'm looking at getting the OEM versions of XP & Vista for my new build.
I'm sure it's bee asked a million times before but with an OEM version is it ONLY limited to one mother board? I.e. can you change motherboard and reactivate via net or phone one the new motherboard?
can you reactivate? yes
does the license allow you to do it? no
you'll have people storming on here and insisting that it's microsoft's fault for not being more strict in their enforcement of their licenses, but the bottom line is this: OEM is licensed for one motherboard only, violating the license is your call but not something to be condoned.
TBH I disagree with that since although the license says you cant do it, european law seems to disagree.
If you bought a new mondeo an half price and Ford told you it was only valid whilst you live at your current address, would you ingore them when you decided to move or not use the car any more?
Both cases are apparently equally unenforcable under european law.
"In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penises, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship."
a car and a computer are totally different things.
I'm tired of these arguments.
It is Inevitable.....
For cars, perhaps a better analogy would be to rent a Ford, but them not letting you take it out of the country while you had it, which would be totally reasonable to me.
Still not ideal, but more accurate IMO.
As far as I know an oem cd key still works with 32 bit and 64 bit versions. Haven't tested it myself, but will download a 64 bit cd and will test. But for the record, on other forums, people have done it and it does work, it seems the CD keys aren't bound to 32 / 64 bit.
The keys will work, no doubt... whether it will activate or not is another matter - I don't have an OEM license, so can't test, and while I've not looked for an example, I've not stumbled upon any either.
aidanjt, I did state it wasn't ideal, but then not much to compare it to - it's somewhere in the middle ground of our 2 examples... just remember the OEM is a perk, especially when not buying as part of a system... if people start winning cases that individual OEM licenses (from SKUs or not) should be transferable, then MS will either inflate prices and do away with Retail, or just stop selling OEM full stop.
