    Vista Media Centre Question.

Lets say that I have a wireless laptop with vista home premium 32 on it, and a main pc, also with vista home premium 32, and all the mp3 are stored on the main pc. The main PC also has the soundcard and is connected to the stereo.

Can I use the laptop via mediacentre to play files from the main pc without them playing on the laptop? In other words, just using the laptop as a remote control?

    Doable?

    Thanks

Don't think so, though there's nothing to stop you VNCing onto the main box and sorting tracks that way.

It would be a lot easier to buy a cheap remote for your PC...

    windows remote connection.

I've used this for exactly the purpose you highlighted as in the summer it was too warm to run and down the stairs changing mp3's so I'd just login to 192.168.1.2 and change the music that way

RDP isn't part of Vista Home Premium though (I think that's what you mean) - this was the clincher for me buying Ultimate.

Some form of VNC is going to be the only way I'm afraid. But at least it's free.

If that's the case regarding RDP I'm sticking with MCE2005 a while longer then while I save more cash to purchase the ultimate edition instead.

Ultimate OEM isn't that much more than Home Premium is it?

Yeah, I'd reccomend ultraVNC, I tested it the other night...its awesome fast for general desktop use!

you might want too look at using uPnP.

I've not tried it with vista MCE yet (soo much too do, so little time!)

i've not tried it, but a quick google brings up

    www.on2share.com

a mate a work keeps banging on about how much he loves uPnP on his MCE box, think this is what he uses.

    Thanks

I'll try the suggestions in order, so UltraVNC first.

installed on both computers, set my router to let traffic through on port 5900.

It tries to connect, but the program then asks for the ultravnc username and password. I made a password at setup, but there is nowhere to enter a username.

Is this something I have to do in windows, or have I done something wrong?

hmm, when I installed the VNC Server on these machines, all I had to set was a password - check the VNC Default settings and see if you have "Require MS Logon" checked, it could be after the local user credentials perhaps?
