    I've lost windows defender! Help!

    I have windows vista ultimate running with windows live onecare.

    Onecare has informed me to update virus and spyware definitions however when I try I just get a message saying I can't update.

    so I uninstalled windows defender but still the same problem.

    when I try to reinstal a new copy of windows defender I get a message saying windows defender is included with vista and can't install?????

    How do I get windows defender back?

    goto administrative tools in the control panel, then choose services. start up the windows defender service and make sure its not disabled. if that doesnt work then you must have done something else, next time if you dont want something disable its service first.

    Yep that service is not there.

    Vista was installed as an upgrade from xp would this be why windows defender was displayed in the add & remove programs list before I uninstalled it?

    Anyway it was unistalled successfully but now I can' reinstall it.

    Nope no luck with that one.

    Oh well looks like a clean install, could do with a spring clean anyway

    System restore?

    Does that still exist on Vista?
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Not retail...... OEM but microsoft support is a good call, didn't even think of that!

    I have system restore turned off, maybe a dumb decision to save miniscule ammounts of disk space and increase overall peformance
