Redlight 0. I am getting the hump here.
Sorry to see how Hexus' folding team has dropped down the rankings :( I keep dabbling with coming back (if you'd have me that is! ;) ) but I'm focussing on my Biz-tech account at the moment.
IS that right ? Only 6 active folders now?
still dabbling, but very difficult without dedicated high end hardware!
I've started folding again now that the weather has cooled. This time I'm running a GTX 980, should be somewhat more productive than the GTX670 I had a year ago.
Not folded since I moved home last year. Got a new GPU so might start again.
Going to start tonight again if i can remember how to set it up again.
Thread bump.
The room is well ventilated and I'm off to the pub so I've just fired up some WUs on the 6700K and 980Ti (both stock).
980Ti seems to keep hitting 100% GPU usage then dropping off for a few seconds. Can't be TDP related as it's around 80% and I've got a very aggresive fan profile engaged to keep the GPU cool which is under an EVGA ACX 2.0. Any ideas?
I've seen some WUs bump my GTX 980 up near 100% usage at times and stay there for a few seconds, then fall down to zero and back up again. Then there are some WUs that work the GPU at 40% constantly. Either WU it produces the expected PPD.
Consider folding GPU only, your 980Ti would be producing an order of magnitude more PPD than your 6700K but will be consuming comparable amounts of energy.
Also, the GPU is a little more productive if it's given a CPU core all to itself. You can set core affinities for both CPU and GPU clients accordingly but this approach has never worked properly for me, you can also set the CPU client to run on three threads on your quad core.
Personally, I'm just folding on my 980.
I have been folding for the last few days and climbed under 200 in the Hexus rankings.
Actually thinking of turning an old dual core dell into a dedicated unit.
Stick a 980Ti in it and make 450k PPD ;)
Then I might catch up with you.
You might just do, for the time being at least because running Fallout 4 is more important right now!
Yeah, no more bigadv. There was a point a few years ago where only the 16+ core machines could do the big SMP jobs, but there isn't any more new work for those the last I checked, I guess that's all finished by now.
Nice to see that folding @ home is still going :D
It's much easier to install and get running now as well (using both CPU and GPU computing)
I'm not making the big points anymore having downgraded from a GTX980 to a HD7770 last year, but I still have the 2500K going.
If anyone was wondering, the HD7770 can fold, but only manages a few hundred PPD and isn't feasible to run given the power draw.
i used a Ryzen 1700 for a short while and a Vega.... only for a few days at work here... I catapulted up the ranks.
Taking a break from folding while GPU prices are still absurd. Want to keep my R9 healthy.. :) That said, only about 3 weeks of somewhat convincing work away from pos. 5. Where are all of the point scorers? :P
the entire world sadly decided that Charity started in their bank account and ended in their own income.
so Folding became second import to the power of Crypto mining.
Of course, guess I'm just a little surprised they still haven't swapped back. You know, what with utility companies, governments, environmental agencies and more pushing back on amateur mining, scam ICOs and general knowledge that cryptocurrencies are a crutch for criminals reducing appeal, and being the least relaible / most volatile method of payment in general.
Isn't it ironic that people were working hard folding years ago when mining would have made infinitely more sense, and now that it's difficult, they choose mining over folding? I must be crazy.
Nice info
Folding is now live for nCov2019.

Thanks for that, just joined again. Used to do SETI but this is more useful I think.
might be worth putting graphics cards to use for a few days. Even good CPU power is relatively slow but a mid range graphics card smashes out the units.
To be honest, I'd like to see Amazon, Google and MS offer compute power to a project like this. They likely have oodles of capacity knocking around even as spot instances, and their combined processing power would dwarf anything else anyone else could throw together.
New Team member!
I've joined (rejoined maybe?) - My aged machine might as well do something while I remote desktop into work. I've underclocked my rx480 by 15%. It was OC'd quite heavily but sounded like a hoover and I can't afford for it to die. The CPU is due replacement so less worried.
They seem to have run our of work units to hand out. I haven't seen any activity for a couple of days.
Mine has done some units but now idle.
Oh..

:puke: :puke: :puke:
Me and DR might have a plan for this.
Apparently it was going to wait 3.5h before trying to get another work unit. I hit Pause then Fold and it picked something up in 5 minutes. Only an hours worth of CPU work, but "go team!" :)
I've joined the HEXUS folding team! I can feel the heat
Back in the UK now, is there a way to force Ncov Folding?
Should be able to go to Configure and then choose your cause, set it to the COVID cause, if they have any work units left to fold.
You set it to "any" to do ncov folding. Not that there are any workunits to do most of the time. Right now I'm in Linux in CPU mode only and there isn't any work available. Perhaps if I boot into Windows it will find some GPU work, but it sounds like the NCov folding is a CPU only task.
The only Covid units I had were GPU based.
Nice to know. I've looked up some of the projects my machine has been given on this list, guess I've had an unlucky sample of the GPU only saw non covid work (though I'm happy to do that as well).

If I had some spare hardware I would put a machine in the conservatory, it could do with heating in there :D
Yeah I had to take my CPU ones off as it was hitting the 90s (it is a 4yo AIO, tbh, not sure what the sitch is we expiration on these) and my GPU seems to have got stuck in already.
I started on 11745 which definitely is Ncov, but not on 11746 which isn't showing any results at all on Google?
Again it's been a *long time* since I've done any F@H work, when does it update on the the leaderboards?
I check stats here when folding. Usually takes a couple of hours to be updated, and didn't have the downtime that DwU mentioned.
Thanks, that is much better than the page I got clicking on the link in the client.
It also says I have climbed 111 places within the team today. I shall pwn you all, bwahaha! :D
Edit: Though it only shows 4 work units, the official table shows the one I submitted this morning.
I've been locked out of the UK by borders closing and can't fold, due to fear of electricity bill causing angry girlfriend. Plus some minor BSOD concerns..
It's nice to see people picking this up though, I'm used to Vimeous and Karlos007 being the only active company. :)
11746 is also Coronavirus related, you can enter the numbers at the bottom of the page for a description. It seems to be better now but initially it was struggling to stay up-to-date with the new units. https://apps.foldingathome.org/project?p=11746
Yeah my CPU was also exceeding 80C despite being a 65W 7700 (non-k), I believe many of the CPU work units make heavy use of AVX.
Where have you found yourself? (Purely out of interest)
I'm on 11748 now on GPU, turned CPU off.
RE: CPU - in terms of wattage, HWMon was reporting 45W for me on a 6700K (no OC) with every core at 100% but it still was getting in to the 90s and the GPU only folding hits CPU pretty hard too, around 20% for me so decided to stick to GPU only.
That's annoying, I seem to have a finished work unit that won't upload. Am watching the amount of credit it is worth slowly dropping.
Edit: As if to call me a liar the unit went through :) Dropped from being worth 8000 to 7000 points though, I presume there is a bonus for fast results? Guess their network is hammered if they can't keep up with returns.
I now have 540,060 credit and 35 WUs since starting, not bad.
I found myself in Finland, and am very comfy here actually.. :)
I mean there are worse places to be stuck!
Yep, its my photography system, full specs in my profile, only machine going.
Now 922,008, just completed another so might cross the 1,000,000 very soon.
Seems jobs on the GPU are getting 70-80,000 for approx 2 hours, the CPU jobs coming in are 3-4,000 for 20 minutes.
Getting a mix of both (job currently running on the CPU).
Can I find out whats its been doing as I have been leaving it over night etc.
I do have PBO tuned on the CPU and the 56 undervolted/overclocked.
If you click the tray app and select "Advanced Control" there is a "Log" tab that gives plenty of details of what it has been up to. For my rig downstairs it tells me it has refused to run any GPU jobs as it can't initialise OpenCL. I think removing the IGP of the old 2200G mixed things around a bit, I shall have to go poke it with a configuration stick (again).
I have noticed some of the CPU workloads have been quite lightly threaded, so the sort of workload where a manual all core Ryzen overclock hurts performance.
Edit: I see the team has dropped two places in the rankings, and now being chased down by Gamers Nexus.
I expect cryptocurrency mining stole away many of the F@H participants in general, and many of them probably just never got back into it after GPU mining became unprofitable.
I agree I would guess most where lost to crypto.
I will say it was a video on linus tech tips which brought it to may attention as I hadn't previously folded/mined.
Of course I remember seeing it on here so looked it up and joined the team.
I guess the teams like linus and gamersnexus will have big following these days so will get many new members.
The way I see it the teams thing is just a bit of fun for motivation and doesn't effect the end result.
My climb up the hexus leaderboard is now slowing as the gaps are getting bigger.
Interestingly my GPU is now getting hit with job after job.
For some reason I've hit massive stability issues and can't pinpoint why. I did upgrade the drivers yesterday and now F@H and games arte crashing.
I've managed to roll back to some older drivers so let's see.
Folding on CPU too or just GPU? Also is anything overclocked?
Got F@H set up after small negotiation with girlfriend.
Took a lot of waiting to receive any WUs and when I did they were all CPU, but after plenty of pausing and unpausing I got the GPU a task this evening. Here's to keeping a lid on Vimeous' tower of points
Mine has been job after job since the afternoon and both CPU and GPU (both running right now).
As it is I am working on the PC and its not hurting performance in any noticeable way but do spot my credit dropping as I use CPU/GPU cycles for myself (how selfish).
Just GPU atm, and seems to be back on track. I'd like to do CPU also, but my cooler really can't handle it.
Off topic - I've been having a lot of issues with Nvidia drivers for months, and rolled back to 436 to get some stability in games. It seems there are a lot of posts online about issues in DX12 game (Forza being the ones that crap up for me).
I'm not sure what was going on yesterday but even the F@H client was dying after a few %, but then could complete 20 loops of 3D Mark stability test and pass it (99% stable).
I should probably do a fresh install of Windows as well if anything, this 'install' is a hack job on to an NVMe which is 2 years old.
I've also had some Nvidia driver issues myself lately; whether it's the drivers at fault or something else causing the issue I don't know, but sorting the drivers sorted the problem. But I'm still getting a disappearing scroll bar in Chrome, dunno if that's related.
Basically I was having a few games crashing, way more frequently than normal, and for some reasons the game crashes were taking Discord out too. When I tried to install the latest driver (a few weeks back at least), it didn't finish installing properly and threw up some errors. Then the Start menu wouldn't work. A reboot fixed the Start menu but I was still getting the general game instability.
I tried ticking the fresh install option and reinstalling the drivers. Didn't change anything and it still broke the Start menu.
Then I ran DDU to completely strip out the driver and install it fresh. This fixed things. Like I say I don't know if it's Nvidia's driver package at fault or something else meddling where it shouldn't be, but that procedure seems to have fixed the problems I was having. And the install didn't break the Start menu either!
Seems my 7 day total (+1 hour) is 2,383,519, not bad.
I guess looking at the less work units compared to others this is based on newer hardware processing faster so much more credit per work unit.
Its not about the numbers and tables but I have caught the bug anyway.
On the driver front all fine here on AMD, I did have to knock my GPU memory clock down slightly it did seem a little optimistic at 925mhz but wasn't having any issues (or so I thought), back down to 900mhz.
You do seem to be rocketing up. I wonder if you get fairly juicy CPU cores too if it knows you're on a core/thread monster like Zen2? My CPU ones are worth around 200 base credits on a 6700K, or at least the ones coming through are worth that.
On the GPU front that's probably the best call of action. If I drop my GPU clocks down by 100MHz it only makes a 1/2c difference in temp and adds a second or two to the TPF.
Current CPU task has a base on 1000 current estimate 10321.
Core on my GPU is hovering around 1600mhz, currently under volted to get there.
Been running Linux all day which only does CPU folding as I don't like using the official AMD drivers and for some reason Folding at Home doesn't seem to like the ROCm opencl. Annoyingly, the WU seems to be running really slowly, so there goes my average. Oh well.
I'm kind of shocked to be at the top of the team top 20 producers leaderboard though with two PCs that I thought were pretty average. Thought we would have some 2080 etc owners leaving my kit for dust. The Ryzens are good, but most of my score is coming from GPUs, and I always buy for value not speed!
We must think in a similar way with hardware as we have arrived it similar specs, Not sure how much better a 2080 would be compared to a vega but either way we are doing a bit I know people generally preferred AMD over nvidia for mining.
Every once in a while somebody being clever will ask what games uses 64gb ram, the usual answer is photo/video editing, as it is 12Gb is cache for those 'slow' NVME drives currently.
Gah. I'm not getting any GPU stuff come through yesterday or even today now.
They must be struggling massively with generating them or processing existing ones?
Mine is doing GPU after GPU task with a few CPU chucked in.
I'm not sure why, but I've easily done 4/5 WUs over the past two days that aren't coming through on the Extreme Overclockers page/signature.
Please note that page uses American timezone as a reference so it might be the work isn't lining up with time how you'd expect it, has confused me before.
If it isn't that, then I can guarantee you it's because the official F@H stats servers are being punished. I was getting bad gateway checking them just now as my most recent WUs aren't showing anywhere. The EOC site has to source its data, and if they can't then it'll all just suddenly appear when the F@H stats page returns.
Also, I'm folding again now. Didn't like seeing the names catching me 500k a day..

You know, the strangest thing is happening, I'm gaining points now but I'm going *down* the world rankings not up! If all I can do is fight for a top 3 in Hexus then so be it.
This first bit of sun has made it noticeably warmer with the GPU churning away.
On a side note - has anything ever actually come out of F@H that has been useful?

Every little helps :woowoo:
It's almost embaressing looking at some of the big hitters on here
Today I convinced someone to stop folding for PCMR and join us, though I don't know how active they'll be. Maybe the idea of chasing my points will provide some incentive...
:D
I've got a work unit which got finished and has nowhere to go, no collection server, for maybe 3 hours. Restarting the client when I got up didn't help. :/
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...59/unknown.png
There's server stats at https://apps.foldingathome.org/serverstats , but I can't make sense of it
Apparently the network is over 1500 petaflops now, which is quite something! Is there a centralised way of tracking the network's compute power? It would be interesting to see how much it has grown in recent months.
https://www.techpowerup.com/265503/a...-19-consortium
I have just got going with my rig on the Hexus team. 31 threads and a 1080ti chugging 700 Watts, geting warm in here. Lol.
I haven't had the client on anything close to 24/7 but I don't seem to have had any new units in a while now. Has anyone else been struggling the past couple of days?
I'm back too, older and wiser. 6 core AMD + GTX 1060, and a crappy 4 core intel at work plugging away. How does the software run with AMD GPU's these days?
AMD GPUs should work fine. I struggled to find any decent benchmarks when I looked a few weeks back but I think both brands perform well now. Sadly F@H benchmarks seemed to fade from popular benchmarks when crypto mining took over, but they never really reappeared when that died off either.
Edit: Just found this: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...nz0/edit#gid=0
It looks like Navi is fine now.
Anyone else having problems getting WU's? Both my rigs sitting idle.
