Outlook > Spell Check breaks Intermittently - Help !

I have had a problem with Outlook 2003 - that also exists in Outlook 2007 on a brand new machine

Sometimes, 'spellcheck' is just not on

You can mis-spell a word as baddddddly as you like - but it will not get picked up

Another symptom is that when the spellcheck is NOT working - right clicking on a word does NOT give you thesaurus etc...

...instead it asks if you want to add a signature (or sumsuch)

When I scan Google for this - the problem is listed a few times - but not with any simple explanation

I think the problem is that the question is too complex for most search engines to give you the right solution page

There were a couple of results that ask about 2 registry settings - but mine seem to be correct

Can anyone shed any light as to why Microsoft's spellchecker suffers performance anxiety sometimes ?

BTW: I get the same thing in Word on its own as well

(Which makes sense - given that Word is my Outlook editor )
