    Slow Bittorent Speeds

Hi, im trying to download some (legal) torrents. They have plenty of seeds but im getting really low speeds. Also ones that i have downloaded before are all seeding at 0b/s even though they are set to max possible.

Azureus says that there may be a NAT problem?

Also i tried setting up port fowarding but i could not tell any difference when i had done it and when i restarted my computer my static ip was causing me not to be able to connect so i switched it back to DHCP.

    Any ideas??

It may also be that your ISP is throttling you .... Mine throttles during most of the day time.

after you apply port forwarding, you'll need to give it a minute to update the tracker and give you some remote connections.
"my static IP was causing me not to be able to connect"
    how come?
    are you on windows XP?
did you set up the default gateway and subnet masks?

have you tried using another torrent client,
something like utorrent is only 160kb and doesn't need an installer. might be worth a shot, to see if its not something in azureus settings.
Make sure also you're setting your upload limit to about 70% of your upload speed, otherwise you'll throttle badly if you use all your upload.

Have you enabled uPnP? and have you forwarded the uPnP ports through the windows firewall?

I'd bet any money that you're being traffic managed. Most isp's are now throttling torrent traffic and have also managed to throttle encrypted traffic as well. Try downloading after midnight, i have a funny feeling that your speed will shoot up.

That may be the case, does Azureus have encription i could try, i can see and option for it?

However, ive tested the port i setup with forwarding (even though no static ip atm so it probably makes no difference, as well as a random suitable port and azureus says NAT error.

uPnP is enabled on the router, do i need to enable it in azureus?

    Could be

    Bittorrent program you are using
    Configuration of it
    Firewall
ISP limiting it or blocking ports
Torrent it self has connection problems or to few a seeds

    Few tips to follow

Do not use upnp and port fwd together.

If you use upnp, then remove any port fwds you might have set up for the program.

If your using manual port fwd, turn upnp off in the torrent program and any other nat options that it might have

if using utorrent ( which is my choice ) then pick a port thats not default ie 2050 / 2020/ 5050 you get the picture

lower the number of connections per torrent / up them depending

    turn encryption on

if the torrents from a public tracker try using a client with dht , if on a private tracker most of the time this is disabled by the tracker.

whats your isp ? ntl/blueyonder/virgin ? if so they have rolled out throtling to all of the network now

if using static ip's you need to set the default gateway and dns and you needed to edit the port fwds to point to the new ip

Ok im 99% sure its ISP now cause upnp is enabled on both, router and client and ive deleted the port foawrding stuff i did, i have determined the proper settings for my upload speed.

And finally because im on freedom2 surf and it blocks bittorent, well at least sloooooooooooooooows it down.

However when i try to enable encryption i cannot find the option, supposively:

To enable the encryption you have to switch to intermediate user mode and go to Tools -> Options -> Connection -> Transport Encryption and enable the Require encrypted transport checkbox.
But its not there, is it differnet or not available on linix, i have the latest version afaik.

    Thanks

    Neil,

re-read the error, and it gives you a possible solution, albeit not clearly.

Switch the client to "Intermediate"mode, and you should see under the options --> connection tabs a check to enable encyrption, although to be honest this won't help you
    It is Inevitable.....

Ok, sorry i was being stupid and not realising you could expand the options lol

Ok so its enabled but alas it does not seem to be helping, are you suggesting that it is not the problem or that it will not work?

    Thanks

I'm suggesting that encryption won't make a difference.

Sound like your ISP is throttling you - so in that case your hands are tied.

before you go off on one looking for a new ISP, how many torrents to you download share and how often, there are only so many legal torrents out there, is it not worth persisting with a slow connection to get the ones you want, or asking someone to get them and mail them to you if its urgent rather than the hassle of switching an ISP.

If it says you have a NAT problem, that's an issue on its own that will cause bad speeds, independent of your ISP.

Read the help files with azzy to solve it
