    Your ram's easily fine.

Just get whichever package you'd personally make the most use of. I personally wouldn't go any lower than premium, but you may think differently.

your ram should be fine for any edition Vista, I agree with ajbrun, I wouldn't go for anything less than Home Premium...

I went for Ultimate x64 not had any problems really :-)

unless you really need the all features of ultimate, save yourself the money and get the correct one with the features you need, not just the shiny one that has everything that you probably wont need/use.

Im also in the same situation, I'm building a PC using some parts to replace my ageing win98 PC.

I was thinking about Linux, but then I won't be able to play some games online as I'd like to dabble into online gaming.
I'll be using the PC for www, online gaming (hopefully) general tasks really. My PC in the sig below is my gaming and multimedia PC.

I was thinking about Vista home premium or XP home.
Which of these three do you think would be best suited for me?

Im wary of security issues using Vista as it's quite new, but would like it for future-proofing, and also what are the difference between the home and pro versions of XP?

Mnay thanks and sorry if Im hijacking this thread

i can only recommend xp until such time as vista becomes a requirement. its so mature now and just does what its told when its told like MS operating systems for home PCs never really have

or more precisely, im looking for a "stripped down as much as possible" winxp to play games on, to sit alongside linux for everything else. there is also this "dx10 on xp" project thats mentioned around here somewhere which is probably worth at least keeping an eye on just in case it works.

I've tried ultimate (I have a home premium OEM disc but since my system has been unstable and you get 120 days to activate I've just left it unactivated) and you don't really get anything extra.

I played a bit of poker. Can't think of anything else I used though. It's got things like 'fax wizard' that were completely useless to me.
